So I finally pulled the trigger on the EOS R7 after years of rocking my old 90D because I needed that snappy dual pixel autofocus for my travel vlogs. The image quality is killer but man the audio is giving me such a headache. I've been using my old Rode VideoMicro but for some reason on the R7 it sounds super thin and there's this weird hiss whenever I turn the manual gain down below like 25 percent. I thought the preamps on this body were supposed to be better but maybe it's just a compatibility thing with my cable? Or maybe the mic is just too close to the lens motor because I keep hearing the RF-S 18-150mm hunting for focus in quiet rooms.
I'm heading to Japan in about three weeks so I really need to sort this out before I'm stuck with unusable audio in the middle of Shinjuku. I'm looking for something that handles wind well but isn't so big it blocks the flip screen or makes the whole rig too front-heavy since I do a lot of one-handed walking shots. I've heard some stuff about the new multi-function shoe adapters but they look kind of flimsy to me and I'm worried about breaking them in a crowded train.
I've looked at:
I've got about 250 bucks to play with maybe 300 if it's really worth it. Has anyone found a specific mic that plays nice with the R7's auto-gain or should I just stick to manual and find something with a higher output?
Regarding what #1 said about "Unfortunately, the R7 preamps are kind of a..." - totally agree. In my experience, Deity V-Mic D3 Pro Super-Cardioid Microphone is best.
Unfortunately, the R7 preamps are kind of a letdown and that hiss is a known headache with low-output mics. I had similar issues trying to use passive gear on mine... you really need something with an internal battery to boost the signal before it hits the camera.
