Hey everyone! I just picked up the Canon R6 Mark II for my travel videos, but the internal mic is definitely lacking. I'm looking for a solid external microphone that balances portability with professional sound quality.

I've looked into some shotgun mics and wireless systems, but I'm curious how they interface with the R6 II's preamps. My main requirements are:

  • High-quality audio for outdoor use
  • Compact enough for a gimbal setup
  • Budget under $300

Since this camera has the multi-function shoe, should I look for a digital mic that uses that connection, or just stick with the standard 3.5mm jack? What are your favorite setups for run-and-gun shooting?

unfortunately, internal preamps were noisy...

> digital shoe is BUGGY... stick to the 3.5mm TRS jack! Seconding the recommendation above. I totally agree that the 3.5mm jack is way more reliable than the digital shoe right now. Ngl, I have seen too many people have issues with the digital connection cutting out mid-shoot, so its better to be safe than sorry. For a gimbal setup under $300, here is how I would break it down:

  • Rode VideoMic GO II: Its only about $99. Since it doesnt need batteries, its super light for a gimbal. Basically my favorite for travel.
  • Sennheiser+MKE+400+Shotgun+Microphone&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 400 Shotgun Microphone: Around $199. Honestly, the built-in shock mount and wind protection are lifesavers for outdoor use.
  • Movo VXR10-PRO External Video Microphone: The ultimate budget pick at like $50. It even comes with a deadcat! IMO the Rode VideoMic GO II is the best choice for portability. I tried a fancy shoe mic once and... well, never again lol. Just stick to the cable and youll be fine!

Quick reply while I have a sec... Re: "> digital shoe is BUGGY... stick to the..." - yeah, basically everyone is saying the 3.5mm jack is the way to go for reliability, and I totally agree. I've been super satisfied with my Sennheiser+MKE+400+Shotgun+Microphone&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 400 Shotgun Microphone for travel stuff. The technical reason it works so well is the 3-step sensitivity switch. I always set the R6 Mark II gain to Manual and drop it way down to almost the bottom, then flip the mic to +20dB. This is called gain staging, and it basically lets the mic do the heavy lifting so you dont hear that background hiss from the cameras preamps. I took it on a windy hike last month and the built-in wind protection plus the low-cut filter saved the whole vlog. If you're really worried about gimbal clearance, check out the Sennheiser+MKE+200+Directional+On-Camera+Microphone&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 Directional On-Camera Microphone. It is tiny and doesnt even need a battery, so its one less thing to worry about. Keeping it simple with the 3.5mm connection is definitely the way to go for run-and-gun shooting. No bugs, just clean audio.
