I finally pulled the trigger on the R7 and I'm freaking out because I'm heading to Yellowstone in like three weeks and still don't have a long lens! I'm mostly into birds and maybe some bison if they're close enough.

Right now I'm torn between the RF 100-400mm because it's so tiny and cheap, or maybe trying to find a used EF 100-400 L II but that might be way too heavy for hiking all day? My budget is strictly under 800 bucks. I also saw that weird 800mm f11 prime but that f11 sounds kinda scary for early morning shots... which one is gonna give me the sharpest shots for my money without breaking my back?

Congrats on the R7, its a fantastic body for birds. Honestly, if you are hiking all day in Yellowstone, you really want the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM. I have been using one for a while and I am very satisfied with how it performs. People sleep on it because it isnt an L lens, but it honestly punches way above its weight class. Heres why it works so well:

  • Weight: It is seriously light. You can carry it all day without your neck hurting or needing a monopod.
  • Reach: Since the R7 is a crop sensor, that 400mm becomes a 640mm equivalent, which is plenty of reach for birds.
  • Focus: The Nano USM is snappy and keeps up perfectly with the R7 autofocus system. Dont worry too much about the f8 aperture. The R7 sensor handles noise well enough and modern software makes it a non-issue. It is definitely the smartest pick for your budget and your back!
