I've been shooting with Canon gear for over a decade now and honestly I always took pride in being one of those naked lens purists. I never liked putting extra glass in front of my optics because I was worried about losing that crispness or getting weird ghosting when shooting into the sun but man, I just got back from a weekend trip to Cannon Beach in Oregon and it was a total reality check. The wind was kicking up so much fine sand and salt spray that I was constantly wiping my front element with a microfiber cloth and now I'm panicking that I might have micro-scratched the coating on my 24-105mm f/4L. It is my workhorse lens for my 6D Mark II and I really can't afford to replace it or have the front element serviced right now.
I've always heard that some of these modern digital sensors are super sensitive to internal reflections from flat filters so I'm looking for something that actually maintains the quality of the glass. I know some people swear by B+W or Hoya but there are so many different versions now like the HD3 or the Nano stuff and it's getting kinda confusing. I want something that's easy to clean too—the salt air really made a mess of things last week. My budget is probably around $60 to $80 for a 77mm filter since I don't want to buy the absolute cheapest thing out there but I also don't need a $200 piece of glass just to keep dust off.
I am looking for stuff for my main kit:
Has anyone else with a 6DII noticed a specific brand or line of protective filters that doesn't cause extra flare when you're shooting landscapes or backlit portraits? I'm specifically looking for stuff that doesn't degrade the sharpness of the L-series glass because that's why I bought the 6D Mark II in the first place. I've seen some people talk about the Protector filters versus UV filters—does it actually matter for digital? Just trying to find something that holds up well in windy or coastal environments without ruining my shots...
You might want to consider switching to clear protectors rather than UV filters for your 6DII setup. Digital sensors dont really need the UV cut and sometimes it adds flare. I would suggest:
^ This. Also, you might want to consider being selective with your budget. That Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is cheap to replace, so dont overspend on its filter. I would suggest:
