I'm looking to invest in a Canon RF camera primarily for filming. I want something that excels in video quality, has good autofocus, and is user-friendly for a beginner. I've heard about the R5 and R6 Mark II, but I'm unsure which one would be the best fit for my needs. Any recommendations or insights on the best Canon RF camera for filming would be greatly appreciated!
I was honestly pretty let down by the standard RF hybrids when I first started using them for serious video work. Having a camera shut down because it is too hot is just the worst feeling when you have got a client waiting. It is not as reliable as I expected for the price point. If you want to avoid those headaches, you really need to look at the Canon EOS R5 C Mirrorless Cinema Camera. I switched to it after my R5 failed me one too many times. It has a real cooling fan which is a lifesaver. It is a bit more complex since it uses the Cinema EOS menu system, but at least you know it wont die on you ten minutes into a long take. For me, reliability is everything and the standard R5 and R6 just didnt cut it for longer sessions without constant babysitting. You basically need that active cooling if you are planning on doing more than just short social media clips... just my two cents.
Ok adding this to my list of things to try. Thanks for the tip!
Canon R6 Mark II would be your best bet.
I've been filming with the Canon EOS R5 for a while now and it really shines when you need high-resolution footage. The 8K raw capability gives you a ton of flexibility in post, which is perfect for cinematic projects. That said, if you're planning to shoot lengthy sessions, watch out for potential overheating issues. A good external cooling solution or shooting at a lower resolution for longer takes might be necessary.
Waiting for R50 V.
