So I finally swapped my old 90D for the R6 Mark II and while the autofocus is insane the internal audio is still kinda meh for what I need. Ive been doing video for years but Im getting some weird floor noise hiss with my current passive mic and Im wondering if the preamps on this body prefer something powered or if I should look into that new multi-function shoe digital setup. I'm hitting a trip to Japan in three weeks so I need to order something soonish.

  • Budget: roughly $250-300
  • Size: small enough to live on my rig full-time
  • Use: outdoor interviews and some foley
  • Must have: good wind rejection since Ill be near the coast

Anyone tried the MKE 400 or the new Canon DM-E1D on this specific body or am I better off sticking with the VideoMic NTG?

Unfortunately the Canon DM-E1D Digital Directional Stereo Microphone was a letdown since the digital connection felt flimsy. Tip: always use manual gain. You planning on using a proper deadcat for the coast?

Honestly, if you're worried about that hiss on the R6 II, you gotta go with something that has its own gain control. Ive been shooting video for a decade and passive mics just dont cut it when you're trying to keep the camera preamps low to avoid noise. Since you're heading to Japan, you want something that wont snag on everything in a crowded train. Here are my go-to picks that wont break the bank:

  • <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+400+Compact+Shotgun+Microphone&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=2222&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 400 Compact Shotgun Microphone is tiny and the built-in wind protection is actually decent, plus it comes with a solid furry cover for the coast.
  • Deity V-Mic D3 Pro Super-Cardioid Shotgun Microphone is a steal and has a step-less gain knob which is perfect for dialing things in on the fly. The MKE 400 is probably better for a permanent rig setup since it's so small. Ngl, saving that extra $100 by skipping the overpriced digital shoe stuff means more cash for sushi in Tokyo. Just set your camera gain to like 1 or 2 clicks above zero and let the mic do the heavy lifting...
