Which wedding registry allows cash gifts without charging transaction fees?

So my fiance and I are finally tying the knot this October in Chicago and we're mostly looking for cash gifts since our tiny apartment is already packed to the gills. I spent all morning looking at Zola and Joy and I'm honestly just more confused now. Zola says they have no fees but then i read in a reddit thread that there is still a 2.5% credit card fee for the guests? That kinda defeats the whole purpose for me. I also checked out Honeyfund but it looks so old school. Does anyone know a site that actually lets people send money without anyone getting charged a percentage? I just want the full amount to go towards our house fund without the middle man taking a cut...

> Zola says they have no fees but then i read there is still a fee In my experience, those no-fee promises always have a catch because banks gotta get paid. If you want zero fees, you basically have to go the bank transfer route. I've used this universal registry tool before to manage everything in one spot. Are you looking for a site that covers credit card fees, or is direct transfer an option for your guests?

Re: "Like someone mentioned, the card networks always take..." - spot on. When we did ours, I spent way too long trying to find a loophole. Eventually, we just did this:

  • listed our Venmo handle on the site
  • had a nice card box at the venue
  • told parents to spread the word It felt a bit awkward at first ngl but honestly nobody cared and we got every cent without those annoying cuts.

Like someone mentioned, the card networks always take a cut. Be careful with platforms claiming zero fees because they often just hide them in the fine print.

  • Verify if guests can use ACH bank transfers instead of cards to bypass the 2.9 percent processing cost.
  • Monitor the 1099-K reporting limits for personal accounts. I would suggest a simple QR code for Zelle at the reception if you want to avoid middlemen entirely.

Re: "Like someone mentioned, the card networks always..." - totally. The standard credit card interchange fee is basically 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction across the board. Most of those "no fee" sites are just saying they dont take an extra commission on top of the processors cut. To get the fee to zero, you basically gotta bypass the credit card rails entirely:

  • Use Joy's "Connected Accounts" feature. It lets you link Venmo or PayPal directly so the transaction happens off-platform.
  • Set up a dedicated high-yield savings account and share the routing and account numbers for direct ACH transfers. It's the most data-direct method.
  • Just be aware that Venmo for Business has its own fee structure now, so stick to personal profiles if you go that route. If you decide to add a few actual items for the traditional folks, Cart To Link is a decent way to bypass the bloated registry UI and just send people a direct link to a cart. It's way more efficient than setting up a whole profile for like five items.
