so i finally upgraded to a canon 90d for my travel channel but the audio is driving me insane. i leave for my trip to japan in like ten days and still cant figure out the mic situation. i looked at the rode videomic pro+ since its the gold standard i guess but i spent way too much on lenses and really need to stay under $150.
i was thinking about the deity d3 pro but then i read these forum posts saying the 90d has weirdly loud preamps and it might hiss anyway? my logic was that a powered mic would solve the floor noise but people are saying it might actually be worse. now im just staring at my cart frustrated. what actually works without that background buzzing?
Honestly, I had issues with my 90D hiss for months and it was just disappointing. People claim the preamps are improved but they really arent as quiet as expected. I tried a few powered mics but unfortunately found that the internal batteries can actually introduce their own electronic interference... super annoying when youre out in the field. If you want something reliable for Japan, grab the Rode VideoMic GO II Compact Lightweight Camera Microphone. It is simple and works every time without needing a separate battery to die on you. The real trick is to go into your camera settings and turn the manual gain down to almost zero. If you let the camera handle the levels, it is gonna buzz regardless of the mic. TL;DR: Buy the Rode VideoMic GO II Compact Lightweight Camera Microphone and set your camera audio level manually to the lowest possible notch.
