So I just got this Canon 90D for my sisters wedding next month and my hands are already cramping up trying to hold it vertically. I looked at the official Canon one and oh my god its like 200 dollars?? That's insane. I'm already way over my budget of $50 for accessories after buying the lens.

I saw some brands on Amazon like Neewer and Vivitar but I have no idea if they'll fry my camera or something. My logic was if it fits it works right? But then I read a review saying the buttons dont always work and now I'm scared. I'm just so lost and dont want to break my new camera. Is there a cheap one that actually works or am I just stuck spending a fortune...

Like someone mentioned, those cheap shutter buttons can fail, but I've been super happy with these two alternatives:

Regarding what #1 said about "I've been using a third-party grip on my..."

  • I would actually be a bit careful with the Neewer one. I bought that exact grip for my 80D a while back and the shutter button on it stopped working right in the middle of a shoot. Super frustrating. Plus it kept draining my batteries overnight even when the camera was turned off. If you want to save cash but avoid cheap circuitry, you might want to consider the Vello BG-C10 Battery Grip for Canon 70D 80D 90D instead. Its a bit more solid and doesn't have those weird power drain issues. Just a quick tip though, whatever cheap grip you buy, make sure to take the batteries out when you aren't using the camera. They don't always communicate well with the camera's power saving mode and can leave you dead before a big event.

I've been using a third-party grip on my 90D for over a year now and honestly, you don't need to spend $200. I bought the Neewer BG-E14 Replacement Battery Grip for Canon 90D and I'm super satisfied with it.

  • Buttons feel tactile and clicky
  • Fits perfectly without any wiggle
  • Cost me under forty bucks It wont fry your camera, so dont worry. Let me know if you need help setting it up!
