So I finally got my hands on the R5 Mark II but man the battery life with these new LP-E6P batteries while shooting 8K is just not cutting it for a full day. I have a huge beach wedding in Maui this coming Friday and I realized I totally forgot to order the grip. I usually stick with the official Canon BG-R20 but I'm seeing some third party ones popping up online and I don't know if they're safe with the new power requirements for the high speed modes.
Does anyone know if the older BG-R10 actually works or if I absolutely have to hunt down the new one before I fly out tomorrow? Which one is the most reliable for heavy weather sealing? Need to know like right now so I can overnight it...
In my experience, you definitely need the Canon BG-R20 Battery Grip. TL;DR: Older grips wont handle the 8K power draw. Dont risk third-party in Maui humidity, stick with official Canon.
Building on the earlier suggestion, I've been really happy with the performance of the newer grips since they're specifically built for that higher power draw. To answer your concern about the older hardware, the Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip will physically fit and power the camera, but it wont let you access the high-speed burst modes or the full 8K capabilities because it lacks the updated internals for the LP-E6P batteries. I'm super satisfied with the Canon BG-R20 Battery Grip because the weather sealing is top notch for humid environments like Maui. If you need a more niche alternative, the Canon BG-R20EP Battery Grip with Ethernet Port is the pro version with a LAN port for fast transfers, though it's probably overkill for a wedding. Honestly, just grab the R20 today. It works well and you wont have any complaints about the build quality or power delivery during the ceremony.
