So I finally got my hands on the R6 V and man the image quality is killer but the micro HDMI port is already giving me anxiety lol. Ive been shooting on Canon for like a decade now and I thought I had my kit dialed in but my old Shinobi is acting super weird with the high frame rate output on this new body. It keeps flickering or just losing signal entirely when I switch to the 4K 60p settings and Im starting to think the handshake is just too much for my older cables or maybe the monitor itself is just dated. I need something that can actually handle the 10-bit feed without lagging because I have a big wedding shoot in Tahoe coming up in about three weeks and I really dont want to be squinting at that tiny flip-out screen all day.
Here is what Im looking for:
I was looking at the Ninja V+ but maybe thats overkill if Im not recording externally? Or maybe the PortKeys stuff? Ive heard mixed things about their builds. What are you guys running on the newer R bodies that doesnt break the bank but also wont fail me in the middle of a ceremony...
Adding my two cents here since I went through the same headache last year with my R series kit. I ended up picking up the PortKeys LH5P II 5.5 Inch 2200nit Touchscreen Monitor and honestly I've been super happy with it. It is crazy bright, like 2200 nits, so you wont even need a hood for those outdoor shots in Tahoe. I was worried about the build too but it has held up great for me and the camera control features are actually a lifesaver when the camera is up on a gimbal. It usually runs around 400 bucks, so you will have money left over for a high-quality cable. I am using the SmallRig Micro HDMI to HDMI 4K Cable 55cm with a dedicated cable clamp. Tbh, that clamp is the only thing that stopped the flickering for me. Once that micro plug is locked in, the signal is solid as a rock. Good luck with the wedding, the light up there is gonna be gorgeous!
Honestly, I've dealt with that exact same flickering on my R series bodies and it's the absolute worst. Over the years, I've tried many setups and the weak link is almost always that micro HDMI port wiggle. If you're doing a wedding in Tahoe, that sun is gonna be brutal so you definitely need high nits to see anything. In my experience, these are your best bets:
