I just got a Canon 5D Mark IV but honestly I feel way in over my head. My friend said I need a lot of extra stuff for our family trip to Oregon next month but I have no idea where to start. My budget is pretty tight like maybe 250 dollars for accessories.

  • do I need more than one memory card?
  • is the strap it comes with okay for hiking?
  • what about extra batteries?

I really want to take nice pictures of the kids but the manual is like a book and I dont want to buy the wrong things. What are the basics I really need...

You should definitely swap it for Peak Design Slide Camera Strap SL-BK-3 which is way more comfortable, tho it might eat a bit of your budget. For power, I tried saving money with generic off-brands, but they were not as good as expected and died halfway through the day. Stick with the Canon LP-E6NH Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery even tho it costs more. For storage, you definitely need two cards because the 5D Mark IV has dual slots. I used some cheap cards before that failed, so now I only trust SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I paired with SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB CompactFlash. Its better to spend a bit more now than lose photos of the kids later.
