I finally upgraded from my beat up 7D to a 5D Mark IV and I'm honestly stoked but ran into a weird snag. I noticed my old cheapy filters are causing some nasty vignetting and soft edges that I never saw on my crop body. Its super frustrating because I'm heading to the Dolomites next month and I need this kit to be sharp. I'm looking for a solid circular polarizer and maybe a 6-stop ND for long exposures. Budget is around 250 to 300 bucks total since I just spent a fortune on the body lol. Should I stick with B+W or is the Hoya stuff just as good for full frame glass? What are you guys using on your Mark IVs to keep that clarity?
Man, the 5D Mark IV is such an amazing jump from the 7D! I totally get the stress about vignetting tho... full frame is literally so unforgiving compared to crop bodies. Kinda scary actually. I'm super protective of my kit so I always lean towards the brass frames on B+W filters because they dont get stuck as easily. You should definitely grab the B+W 77mm XS-Pro Master Circular Polarizer MRC2 since it's super thin and the glass quality is just fantastic. For that 6-stop ND, I use the Hoya 77mm ProND64 Filter and it works like a charm without ruining the sharpness. You'll probably spend around 240 bucks for both. Perfect for your budget! Honestly, you're gonna love the clarity you get in the Dolomites with these! Just make sure you check your lens diameter first...
Like someone mentioned, full frame is a whole different beast! I had the same issue when I moved up and it was so annoying. You definitely want slim profile filters to avoid that dark corner drama on your wide glass. If you dont wanna drop your whole budget on just one B+W, you should seriously check out the Hoya 77mm HD3 Circular Polarizer. It is basically bulletproof and super easy to clean, which is amazing for hiking outdoors! For your ND, I am obsessed with the Haida NanoPro MC ND1.8 6-Stop Filter. It is super budget friendly and keeps colors way more neutral than some pricier ones. Tbh if you are worried about the technical side, check out the reviews on The Digital Picture. They have fantastic deep dives into clarity for full frame setups. Have a blast in Italy, it is gonna be epic!
> Budget is around 250 to 300 bucks total since I just spent a fortune on the body lol. Honestly, it is so ridiculous how much this hobby drains you. You save up forever for a dream body like the 5D Mark IV and then realize you basically have to sell a kidney just to get decent glass and filters that dont ruin your shots. I had such a bad experience recently where I tried to save a bit and unfortunately it was just a total scam... soft edges everywhere. It was definitely not as good as expected for the price. It drives me crazy that companies keep raising prices while quality control seems to be going down the drain. You pay hundreds for a piece of glass and it still feels like a gamble. Its so frustrating when you just want sharp photos in the Dolomites without worrying if your gear is failing you. If you ever need to vent more or want someone to look at your test shots, let me know!
