Are there any affordable cage recommendations for the Canon EOS R7?

So I finally made the jump from my old 90D to the R7 for some wildlife and general video work. Honestly, the autofocus is insane compared to what Im used to but man, this body feels tiny in my hands when I have a heavy lens on it. Ive been using cages for years on my older rigs but this R7 layout is throwing me for a loop with that new toggle switch/dial combo near the thumb. I bought a cheap generic one off Amazon last week and it was a total disaster because I couldnt even reach the dial properly without hitting the metal frame. I am heading out for a two-week trip to the Smokies next month and really need to get my setup rigged out with a top handle and a monitor mount for my Ninja V without breaking the bank. Im looking to spend maybe 60 or 80 bucks max since I already blew my budget on the body and glass. Does anyone know of a cage that actually fits the ergonomics of the R7 without blocking the battery door or the controls? I keep seeing the SmallRig ones but wondering if there are other brands like Falcam or maybe even Neewer that people have actually tried and liked for this specific body?

I went through the same struggle last month after grabbing my R7. I ended up getting the SmallRig Canon EOS R7 Camera Cage 4003 and I am honestly super satisfied with how it handles that weird thumb dial. It didnt break the bank either.

  • battery door stays fully clear
  • fits my monitor mount easily
  • includes a magnetic tool Tbh its a steal for the price and works perfectly with my top handle.

Like someone mentioned, that thumb dial is a total pain to work around. It's basically SmallRig for reliability or Neewer for the tightest budgets. I'd suggest looking at the Falcam F22 & F38 Quick Release Camera Cage for Canon EOS R7 too. It's solid, but be careful tbh because it's designed for their own quick-release gear and might not fit your current top handle. TL;DR: SmallRig for easy compatibility, Falcam for speed.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I would suggest looking at the Neewer Aluminum Alloy Camera Cage for Canon R7 as a solid budget pick. Just be careful though, some of these clones have tight tolerances around the top dial and you dont want to be fumbling with it while you're out in the Smokies. Make sure to check if your specific HDMI adapter fits through the side frame too. I've seen guys snap their micro-HDMI ports because the cage didn't leave enough wiggle room for the cable. Also, keep an eye on the weight balance once you mount that Ninja V on a top handle. It can get top-heavy real quick and might strain the single mounting screw at the bottom if it doesnt have those anti-twist pins. Definitely grab a cage that has the secondary m2.5 side lock or you'll be dealing with annoying camera wiggle all day.
