I've finally got the R1 in my hands after waiting forever but now I'm honestly pulling my hair out trying to pick the right glass to go with it. I'm based in London and I've got a contract starting next month for some high-level football matches and I need to lock this down. The thing is these RF primes are eye-wateringly expensive and I can only justify one right now since the R1 already drained my gear budget. I spent hours reading the reviews on B&H and some photography blogs and everyone keeps saying the 400mm f/2.8 is the gold standard for pitch-side work because of that wide aperture for night games. But then I saw a couple guys on DPReview arguing that the 600mm f/4 is actually better now because the R1's autofocus and tracking are so good you want that extra reach to get the tight facial expressions from across the field. I'm so stuck because some people say just crop in with the 400 but the R1 is only 24MP so I dont know if I really have that much room to play with before the quality drops off for print. It is driving me crazy because I'm literally staring at my cart ready to hit buy but I dont want to regret a 12k purchase. If you're shooting pro sports with the R1 which prime are you actually reaching for to get the job done?

id definitely go with the 400mm first. if youre doing football, the Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM is basically the only choice that makes sense as a solo lens. being at f/2.8 is massive when youre shooting night games under those stadium lights. ive found that even with modern sensors, keeping the iso down as much as possible is key for those clean print shots. since the R1 is only 24MP, you really dont have that much room to crop compared to something like the R5. if you get the 600mm, youre gonna be stuck with too much reach when the action comes toward your end of the pitch. its much easier to add reach than to take it away... i would be careful about the 600mm f/4 for a first big purchase because its just less versatile for different angles. maybe consider grabbing the Canon RF 1.4x Extender too? its way cheaper than buying a second lens and itll turn your 400 into a 560mm f/4 if you really need that extra reach for the far side of the field. i would suggest starting there. honestly, most pros i know stick to the 400 for pitch-side work. it just handles everything better. don't blow your whole budget on the 600 and find yourself cramped at the goal line.

^ This. Also, be careful with that 24MP sensor because it really doesnt allow for much cropping before things get messy for print. I would suggest looking into these budget-friendly alternatives:

Quick reply while I have a sec. I'm actually very happy with the Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM for football. While the Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM is nice, that extra reach is massive on a 24MP body where you cant crop much. The R1's noise floor is low enough that f/4 works well even under stadium lights. It's a practical way to get tight frames without needing a second setup.
