Looking for advice on the best RF mount lens for sports photography. I mainly shoot football, basketball, and track events, so I need something with excellent reach and fast autofocus. The RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS seems like the obvious choice, but I'm wondering if the variable aperture is limiting for indoor sports. Should I consider the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS instead and crop more? Also curious about third-party options from Sigma or Tamron that might offer better value. Weather sealing is important since I shoot outdoors frequently. What's worked best for your sports shooting?
If you need serious reach, the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM is fantastic - its versatile range of 100mm to 500mm is ideal for sports, wildlife, and even aviation photography while maintaining a compact, travel-ready size and weight. The 70-200 just doesn't have enough reach for larger field outdoor games like soccer, lacrosse, football, baseball - those larger outdoor games are where the RF 100-500mm really shines. The 100-500 is a great lens if there's light - you're at f/7.1 not far beyond the 400mm mark, but the R6ii will handle high ISO values well. I've used it to shoot marching band shows at both Kroger Field and Lucas Oil Stadium with good success.
Just saw this thread! I'm still pretty new to sports photography, but I’ve been doing a ton of research because I’m *so* worried about my gear getting ruined in the rain or dust. Basically, if you’re shooting outdoors, the weather sealing on L-series lenses is a must for long-term reliability. I looked at the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM (which is only about $650), but it’s not weather-sealed, which feels risky for rainy football games. If you go the EF route, definitely get the Canon Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R—it’s roughly $200 and feels way more secure and reliable than the knock-off adapters. Also, a really helpful tool is the comparison site "The-Digital-Picture." You can use their image quality tool to see exactly how much detail you lose when cropping. It basically proved to me that a 200mm lens just won't cut it for track events if you want sharp shots. TL;DR: Go for the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM for field sports. The weather sealing and extra reach are way safer bets than trying to crop a 200mm image.
For indoor, court, or night games, the 70-200 f/2.8L is definitely better - indoors and lower light is where large aperture is very useful. You can do sports with the RF 100-500, but it's not as fast as the 70-200 f/2.8 and would be unsuitable for indoor school events. The only thing it has over the 70-200 is the reach, but for most kids' events, including sports, the 70-200 sufficed. If budget is a concern, consider a used EF 70-200mm f/2.8 with the RF adapter - you'll get 90% of the performance at a much lower cost.
