Does anyone know a really solid but cheap remote shutter release for the Canon 6D Mark II that wont die after like two uses? I've been getting way more into landscape stuff lately, specifically trying my hand at long exposures at night, but I'm running into some annoying issues. I live up in the Pacific Northwest where it's always kinda windy and damp, and I've noticed even with my tripod weighted down with my bag, just the act of pressing the shutter button on the camera body itself is giving me just enough micro-shake to ruin the sharpness of the stars. It is so frustrating spending an hour out in the cold just to get back home and see everything is slightly blurry once I actually get the files onto the big screen.
I did some digging online and saw the official Canon RS-80N3, but honestly, 50 bucks for a piece of plastic and a wire feels like a total rip-off and I just cant justify that right now. I started looking at the third-party stuff on Amazon like Neewer and those Pixel ones. The Pixel TW-283 looks pretty cool because it's wireless and does intervals and all that, but I saw a couple of reviews saying the N3 3-pin connector was super tight or didnt fit the 6D Mark II port right or it felt like it was gonna break the pins, which makes me super nervous. Then there's the Canon Camera Connect app, which I tried using, but it's a total nightmare to be honest. It keeps dropping the wifi connection when I'm out in the middle of the woods and it absolutely drains my phone and camera battery in like thirty minutes flat.
I really need to find something reliable for under $25 because I'm pretty broke after buying a used wide-angle lens last month. I've got a camping trip to Mount Rainier coming up next Friday so I'm on a bit of a tight timeline to get this ordered and tested before I head out. Do I just go with a basic wired one for the sake of simplicity or is there a wireless one that actually works for this model? I just want something that wont break if it gets a little damp or if I accidentally drop it in the dirt while I'm fumbling around in the dark.
If anyone has a specific model they've been using with their 6Dii for a while without it falling apart or losing connection, let me know what you think...
^ This. Honestly, dont overthink it. I've used the JJC S-CAN3 Wired Remote Switch for years on my 6D and it is surprisingly tough for the price.
In my experience shooting long exposures for over a decade, I've learned that complexity is usually the enemy of a sharp photo. I've stood out in the freezing rain more times than I care to admit, and the amount of times a wireless trigger has failed me compared to a simple cable is honestly staggering. I remember a trip to the North Cascades where my fancy wireless setup just died because the humidity shorted the receiver. It's a total heartbreaker when you've hiked for miles just to have a battery or a signal drop ruin the night. You are right to be cautious about the fitment on the Canon EOS 6D Mark II. The N3 port is quite deep and those 3-pin connectors are delicate. I have seen guys try to force a Pixel TW-283 or similar cheap units into the socket, and if the mold isn't perfect, you risk bending a pin inside the camera. That's a nightmare repair that costs way more than the official Canon remote. tbh, I've seen it happen twice. My advice is to skip the wireless features for now. Units like that Pixel TW-283 Wireless Remote add two more sets of batteries that can die in the cold mountain air. Since you're on a budget and heading to Rainier, just get a basic JJC wired remote. They are surprisingly resilient for being so cheap. I've dropped those wired ones in the mud, wiped them off on my jeans, and they just keep clicking. For long exposures, simple is always better... plus you dont have to worry about syncing issues in the dark.
