So I finally got a Canon Rebel T7 a few months ago and I am totally obsessed with the idea of taking those super close up shots of bugs and flower petals in my backyard here in Florida. I've been doing a bit of reading online and honestly I'm a bit lost with all the options. I saw everyone recommending the Canon 100mm L lens but that's like way out of my budget right now since I can only spend maybe $150 or $200 tops before spring really hits and all the spiders come out.

I found some stuff about extension tubes being a cheaper way to go but then some forums say they make the viewfinder super dark and hard to focus with which sounds like a nightmare. I also looked at those Raynox DCR-250 snap-on things but I'm worried they wont fit the kit lens that came with my T7 (the 18-55mm one).

Heres what I am looking for:

  • Something that works with the 18-55mm kit lens if possible
  • Easy to carry around since I'll be crouching in the dirt lol
  • Needs to stay under that $200 limit for everything including lighting if I need it

Do I actually need a dedicated macro flash or can I get away with just a diffuser for the pop up flash for now? I've seen some DIY ones made out of pringles cans but idk if that actually works well or if it just looks silly. What would you guys grab first if you were starting from scratch with a basic T7 setup? Just trying not to waste money on junk...

Honestly, getting into macro on a budget is pretty satisfying once you dial in the technical specs. Since you're using the T7 kit lens, you definitely don't need to drop a grand on an L-series lens yet. I've been very happy with how extension tubes perform for the price. They maintain the optical quality of your glass because there is no extra lens element in the way. Here is what I would grab to stay under that $200 limit:

> I saw everyone recommending the Canon 100mm L lens but that's like way out of my budget Yeah, total overkill. Like someone mentioned, you can get results for way less. Id grab a Fotodiox 58mm Reverse Mount Adapter for Canon EF. It lets you mount your kit lens backwards, which basically turns it into a microscope. Since you'll lose light, pair it with a Godox TT600 Speedlite Flash. A simple DIY foam diffuser works way better than a pringles can for soft light on shiny bugs.

I'd be really careful with those super cheap extension tubes. I bought a plastic pair once and they almost got stuck on my T7 mount, which was a total heart attack moment. Every time you swap them out in the dirt, you risk getting dust on your sensor too. If you want something safer, you might want to consider an achromat filter like the Marumi DHG Achromat Macro 200 (+5) 58mm. It just screws onto the front of your kit lens. Since it's a double element lens, it stays sharp without the weird color fringing you get with cheap kits. For lighting, the Pringles can thing works but it's super awkward. I would suggest getting a JJC LED-48D Macro Ring Light. It's affordable and clips on. Just make sure to watch your distance so you dont accidentally bump the lens into a spider!
