Which external flash works best with the EOS Rebel T7 for beginners?

Honestly I'm so fed up with this Rebel T7 because I just found out it doesnt have that center pin on the hot shoe so none of my cheap gear works. I bought a basic Neewer flash for a family birthday next weekend and it just sits there doing nothing which is super annoying.

My logic was that any flash would work but apparently Canon made it difficult for beginners on purpose. I really need something that actually works with this specific model without costing more than the camera itself. I have maybe $120 max to spend right now. Is the Speedlite 270EX II the only option or is there something else that wont give me a headache? I just want to take decent indoor photos...

Most cheap ones rely entirely on that center pin Canon removed so they wont work at all. I would suggest the Godox TT350C Mini TTL Speedlite for Canon instead. It fits your $120 budget easily and actually talks to the T7 pins. Just watch out for older stock... you want the newer firmware so it fires every time.

  • I have had so many issues with this specific design choice. It is really disappointing how they limited compatibility for beginners like that. If you want something reliable, the Canon Speedlite EL-100 is probably the most logical choice. It is fully compatible with the T7 and handles the lack of a center pin without any hacks. It is simple to use and the bounce and swivel head is a lifesaver for indoor shots. It is way better than trying to use the built-in flash. The Canon Speedlite 270EX II is an option too, but it only tilts up, which limits how you can bounce light compared to the EL-100. If you want more features for less cash, the Godox TT350C Mini Flash for Canon is a decent alternative that supports TTL on that mount. It is a bit smaller but it definitely beats having a paperweight. Personally, I would skip the 270 and grab the EL-100 if you find a good deal. It is just more flexible for family events...

Unfortunately Canon gimped that shoe which is a mess. I had issues with cheap gear too until I got a Godox TT685C II for Canon since it actually works with those T7 pins.
