I just got this old Canon Rebel T3i from my uncle and its cool but the photos inside are super dark and the little pop up flash looks like trash lol. I want to buy one of those big flash things that sit on top but I have no clue what fits the EF mount or if the mount even matters for the flash?
I saw some stuff about speedlites online and its honestly so confusing with all the numbers. My budget is like maybe 120 bucks max since I am just starting out. I need something for my sisters birthday party next week so I dont have much time to learn. Does anyone know which external flash actually works with these older cameras without being too complicated?
In my experience, you dont need to spend a fortune for reliable results. Over the years many units have crossed my desk, but for your T3i, I suggest this:
Just saw this. Reminds me of my first gig with a T2i back in the day... I spent the whole night at my cousins wedding blasting people in the face with direct light before someone showed me how to swivel the head and bounce it off the ceiling. Totally changed the game for me. If you want something decent that fits your budget:
> My budget is like maybe 120 bucks max since I am just starting out. Just getting caught up here. Quick clarification tho... are you shooting in a big hall or just a house? Ceiling height changes everything when you're bouncing light for a birthday party. I've been really satisfied with the Canon Speedlite 430EX II for this kind of setup. You can find them used for like 70 bucks and the reliability is way better than the cheap clones. It integrates perfectly with the T3i menu system too. If you gotta buy new, the Neewer NW670 E-TTL Flash for Canon is simple and stays way under your 120 limit. Just make sure you grab some Powerex 2700mAh Rechargeable AA NiMH Batteries so you arent waiting ten seconds for the flash to recharge after every shot. Standard batteries just wont cut it for a busy party.
I've been using third-party flashes for years and honestly, you don't need to drop big money on the Canon name brand to get great photos at a party. I've been super happy with the Neewer NW670 E-TTL II Flash Speedlite on my older Rebel bodies. When you compare Neewer to the big brands like Canon or even Godox, you're getting like 90% of the performance for way less money. It's usually around 50 or 60 bucks, which leaves you plenty of cash for cake or whatever else you need. The NW670 works well because it fully supports E-TTL, which is basically auto mode for your flash. It's way less complicated than trying to learn manual settings right before your sisters birthday. Just pop it on, tilt the head up at the ceiling, and it'll handle the brightness for you. I've had zero complaints with the build quality for casual use. If you want something even smaller, the Godox TT350C Mini TTL Speedlite is another great budget option that fits the T3i perfectly without being too top-heavy. Its definitely worth checking out since you're just starting.
Jumping in here because I have been super satisfied with my older setup for years and it still works well for these kinds of family events. Re: 'Just saw this. Reminds me of my first...'
