I've been trying to do some night photography around the city lately and the camera shake on my T7 is driving me crazy even when I use a tripod. I need a remote shutter release but I'm getting conflicting info on what actually works with this specific model. My logic was just to buy the official Canon BR-E1 bluetooth one so I dont have to deal with wires but then I read a few reviews saying the T7 doesn't even support that remote? Something about it not having the right internal setup for it.

So then I looked at the wired RS-60E3 which is super cheap-like 20 bucks-but I'm worried the cable is gonna be too short or just get in the way. I tried using the Camera Connect app on my phone but it's honestly a nightmare to keep it connected and it lags so much that I miss the timing on shots. Does anyone have a T7 and actually use a remote that doesn't suck? I'm hoping to find something reliable before my trip next weekend because I really want some clean long exposures of the skyline without that annoying blur...

Jumping in here... honestly the T7 is kinda picky with its hardware. Before I suggest a specific one, are you just doing single long exposures for the skyline or are you planning to do stuff like star trails where you need precise timing? That makes a big difference in what you should buy. I've looked at the specs for a few and here's what I'd weigh:

  • Canon RS-60E3 Remote Switch : The official wired option. It's solid but the cord is only about 2 feet. I'd be careful because if it dangles, that slight tension can actually cause the micro-shake you're trying to avoid.
  • Pixel RW-221 Wireless Shutter Release for Canon : This uses radio frequency instead of the flaky app connection. It's much better for city shots where you might want to step back from the tripod. Just make sure to pack extra batteries.
  • JJC Timer Remote Control for Canon : Basically a wired intervalometer. If you're doing bulb mode for more than 30 seconds, this is way more reliable than trying to time it manually. Check the port on the side of your camera first to be 100% sure it's clear of dust... sometimes a bad connection there makes people think the remote is broken when it's just gunk in the jack. Let me know which way you're leaning and I can help you dial in the settings for the trip.

Yeah, unfortunately you hit the nail on the head with the bluetooth thing. Spending ages trying to get mine to pair only to realize the T7 just doesnt support it was a total bummer. I had huge issues with the app too. It kept disconnecting right when the light was getting perfect. Just a nightmare. Not as good as expected at all. A few things I learned the hard way:

  • short wires are a nightmare for bumping the tripod legs
  • the 2.5mm side port is your only real hope for stability
  • those wireless radio frequency remotes beat the app every time The setup I use now has a little receiver that plugs into the side of the camera. It basically acts like a long-distance wired trigger. That finally let me get clean exposures without the lag or the shake from actually touching the camera body. Worth every penny honestly.
