So I finally grabbed the R7 for some hybrid work but I totally blew my budget on the body and a decent lens. I've rigged up plenty of cameras before so I know my way around a rail setup but this R7 body shape is kind of funky with that top dial. My logic was to just grab a cheap SmallRig like I usually do but even those are creeping up in price lately.
I need something under $60 because I'm tapped out and have a gig this weekend. Looking for:
Are the Neewer ones actually solid or do they feel cheap? Any off-brand gems out there?...
Get the SmallRig Canon R7 Cage 4003 because it is amazingly solid! I love how secure it feels compared to off-brands. Safety first when youre working a gig this weekend, right?
Like someone mentioned, the SmallRig is usually the first thing people suggest, but I have to disagree on it being the only professional path forward. In my experience, SmallRig prices have climbed into a territory where you arent always getting the best bang for your buck anymore. If you are strictly under sixty dollars for this weekend, the Neewer Video Camera Cage for Canon EOS R7 with NATO Rail is actually a very reliable alternative. I have tried many different setups over the years and Neewer has really stepped up their machining lately. The key thing with the R7 is the anti-twist. You mentioned zero wiggle, and that is only possible if the cage uses the 1/4 screw on the bottom plus the small m2 security screw on the side. The Neewer model has this, and it stays dead still. I have seen too many shooters trust a cage that only has one point of contact, and trust me, that cage will shift the second you put any torque on a follow focus or a heavy lens. You might also look into the FALCAM F22 Camera Cage for Canon R7 if you can find it on sale, tho it pushes the budget a bit. It is incredibly stiff and professional. My biggest concern with budget cages is usually the battery door clearance, but both of these leave plenty of room for an LP-E6NH to pop out without snagging. Just be careful with that top dial clearance... some off-brands make it really hard to reach that wheel if you have larger hands. The Neewer one is safe though.
