So I just bought a used Canon 5D Mark IV for my big trip to Iceland and I leave in literally five days and I am totally panicking because I have no idea what I am doing. Its so much heavier than my phone and I only have the camera body and one lens right now.
I have about $200 left in my budget but I dont even know what else I need to buy like do I need special memory cards or extra batteries? I really dont want to mess this up and miss the northern lights because I forgot something basic. Sorry if this is a dumb question I just dont know where to start. What are the absolute must have travel accessories I need to get before I leave?
TLDR: You need spare juice and a stable base for those 30.4MP sensor long exposures. The 5D Mark IV is a tank but the LP-E6N cells struggle when the voltage drops in the cold. Since you are on a $200 budget, grab the Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack for Canon LP-E6N to keep shooting. It comes with a USB charger which is great for the car. For storage, a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I is fast enough to clear the buffer without issues and holds plenty of RAW files. You definitely need a tripod for the Aurora; the K&F Concept 62 inch Aluminum Travel Tripod is a decent option that handles the 5D4 weight without too much flex. Keep your spare batteries in an inner jacket pocket to maintain their charge or theyll die in minutes out there. Honestly, that camera is amazing in low light, youll be fine.
^ This. Also, batteries and stability are sorted!
Unfortunately generic remotes werent as good as expected and died in the cold for me. Grab the Canon RS-80N3 Remote Switch to keep those aurora shots sharp.
