So I finally got a Canon Rebel T7 for my birthday and I am so hyped to start taking actual photos that arent just on my phone but man indoor lighting is literally killing me right now. I tried taking some test shots of my cat in the living room and they either look super grainy because I have to turn the settings up or I use the little pop up flash and everything looks totally washed out and flat or there is this huge dark circle at the bottom because my lens is in the way I think?

My logic was that I just needed a bigger light on top so I started searching for external flashes but now my head is actually spinning with all the options. I saw some stuff about a hot shoe and apparently the T7 is missing a center pin? I dont even know what that means really but some people on a review site said some flashes wont work because of it and now I am terrified of buying the wrong thing and wasting my money. I was looking at the official Canon ones but they are so expensive it is almost as much as the camera itself! Then I saw brands like Godox and Neewer but there are a million models like TT600 or V1 or whatever and I just dont get what the difference is for a beginner like me.

I really need to figure this out soon because I am supposed to take pictures at my sisters baby shower next month at this restaurant in Chicago and it is basically a cave in there. My budget is probably around $100 maybe a little more if it is really worth it but I just want something that is easy to use and wont make everyone look like ghosts. Do I need one that tilts? I saw people pointing them at the ceiling which seems smart but how does the camera know how much light to send if it is not pointing at the person? Sorry if these are really basic questions I am just so lost with all the technical talk...

In my experience with the Rebel T7, that missing center pin on the hot shoe is a major trap for beginners. It basically prevents older or cheaper manual flashes from firing at all. Over the years, I have seen many people buy standard units only to find they just wont work. You definitely need a flash that supports TTL and has been updated for Canons pin-less shoes. I highly recommend the Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon because it is specifically designed to handle your camera model and fits right into that slightly-above-100 price bracket. My best tip for the baby shower is to bounce the light. Tilt the flash head toward the ceiling or a nearby white wall instead of at your sister. This turns the entire ceiling into a massive light source, which stops people from looking like ghosts and gets rid of that lens shadow you mentioned. Since this model has TTL, the camera and flash talk to each other to handle the math for you automatically.
