Does anyone know what the best budget-friendly external flash options are for the Canon Rebel T7 because I am so lost right now. I just got the camera a few weeks ago and every time I try to take pictures of people inside they look all washed out and spooky with that little pop-up flash thing on top. I tried looking on Amazon but there are a million options and some say they wont work with the T7 because of some missing pin? I dont even know what that means honestly.

I really need to figure this out soon because I'm supposed to take photos at my sisters engagement party in like three weeks here in Chicago and I dont want to ruin her memories. My budget is pretty tight like maybe $60 or $70 max if possible. I saw some brands like Neewer and Godox but I dont know if they are good or if they will break my camera. Sorry if this is a super basic thing to ask I just really dont want to buy the wrong thing and waste my money... help?

Unfortunately, Canon really did a number on people with the Rebel T7. They removed the center sync pin from the hot shoe, which is that big silver dot you see on most other cameras. It was honestly such a disappointing move because it makes almost all cheap, universal flashes completely useless. I struggled with this for a while when helping a friend out... it isnt as straightforward as it used to be. Since you are on a tight budget for that engagement party, you need something that specifically supports Canons electronic communication. Dont touch the super basic manual flashes because they literally wont fire. Here are the best bets that actually work:

  • Godox TT350C Mini TTL Flash for Canon
  • Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon
  • Yongnuo YN568EX III Speedlite for Canon The Godox TT350C fits right in your budget and is probably the most reliable pick. It is compact and has TTL, which basically means the camera and flash talk to each other to figure out the right brightness so you dont have to guess. If you can find the TT685II-C on sale or used, jump on it tho. Its way more powerful, which helps in big Chicago event spaces, even if it might push your 70 dollar limit a bit. Just remember to point the flash head up at the ceiling instead of directly at your sister. It will make the light look way softer and more professional. You are gonna do great, just make sure you get some rechargeable batteries too because these things eat power like crazy. Honestly, the T7 is still a capable camera, it just takes a bit of extra effort to gear up properly.
