I finally made the jump from my old Rebel to the EOS R50 last month and honestly I feel like a total beginner again because I sold all my old EF glass to fund the body. I'm stuck with the 18-45mm kit lens right now and it is driving me crazy how slow it is. I tried taking some shots of my dog to test the eye tracking and the backgrounds are just... messy. Not creamy at all. I have my sisters engagement party coming up in two weeks at a local park and I really need a dedicated portrait lens but my budget is tapped out at like $280 max.
I know the RF 50mm f1.8 is the obvious cheap choice but im worried about the crop factor making it like 80mm and being way too tight if we move indoors for the dinner part of the night. Is there anything wider that doesn't cost a fortune or should I just suck it up and get the nifty fifty and hope I have enough room to back up? I've seen some third party stuff like Meike or TTArtisan but I don't know if the autofocus is gonna be reliable enough for a one-time event like this. What is actually the best budget portrait option for this specific sensor that wont leave me with blurry or busy shots?
Unfortunately, Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM has mediocre separation.
To add to the point above: the 50mm is honestly amazing and I love it for headshots! I used the Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM at a crowded party once tho and yeah, it was a total struggle. If you want something wider for that dinner, grab the TTArtisan 35mm f1.8 AF Canon RF. It is a total lifesaver on APS-C!
In my experience, managing tight budgets is tricky. I once overspent on a vintage strap that snapped during a park shoot... almost broke everything. Anyway, sorry, I kinda went off on a tangent.
