The R50 is surprisingly capable for the price but the ergonomics are driving me a bit crazy. Ive been shooting Canon for over a decade now and I thought Id be fine with the smaller form factor for a trip I have coming up to Olympic National Park next month. But after a few test runs it just feels like a toy in my hands and I'm worried about the longevity of the mount if I keep hanging heavy accessories off the top. I need a solid cage that doesnt break the bank but also wont block the flip out screen which is kind of the whole reason I got this body for vlogging on the trail. I'm looking at maybe spending 50 or 60 bucks tops for the cage itself. SmallRig is the obvious choice but I heard there might be some issues with the HDMI port access on some of the cheaper knockoffs from Amazon. Is there a specific one that lets you still get to the battery easily? I hate having to take the whole rig apart just to swap a cell halfway through a shoot. I also need to make sure whatever I get has enough mounting points for a top handle and maybe a cold shoe offset because that pop up flash is right in the way...
I just saw this and honestly you gotta be careful with those ultra-cheap Amazon knockoffs. A generic 6061 aluminum cage I tried last month had battery door clearance that was off by nearly 0.5mm... ended up filing the metal down myself which was a total mess. Switching to the Neewer Full Camera Cage for Canon EOS R50 with Arca Swiss Base was a much better call since the CNC machining is way more precise. It gives you that beefier grip without blocking the micro-HDMI port, but make sure to check cable thickness. Quick tip tho... some cages have a sharp edge right where the screen flips out. Sticking a tiny piece of Gaffer Power Gaffer Tape Black 1 Inch on the frame helps so you dont scratch the LCD. Just watch the torque on those 1/4-20 screws, it's easy to strip the threads if you're not careful.
Checking back in... I totally agree about the battery access, its a nightmare otherwise. I am really satisfied with the Ulanzi Falcam F22 Quick Release Camera Cage for Canon R50 for my hiking kit.
I totally get that toy feeling with the R50. My experience was similar when I grabbed one last year for a hiking setup and realized it just didnt have enough grip. Honestly, I am super satisfied with the SmallRig Camera Cage for Canon EOS R50 4214 because it completely changed the ergonomics without adding weight. It works well for bigger hands and doesnt block the ports or the battery compartment.
