I just picked up the R50 to have something smaller than my old bulky DSLR setup for a trip to Chicago next Thursday but man the RF lens lineup for crop sensors is kinda driving me crazy. Ive been shooting for about five years now so I totally get how f-stops and focal lengths work but this 18-45mm kit lens is just garbage in low light, I was out testing it last night and f/6.3 at the long end is basically useless for the look I want. I need something fast and small that wont break the bank because I already spent way too much on the body and plane tickets.
I keep looking at that RF 50mm f1.8 because its cheap and tiny but then I remember the 1.6x crop factor which makes it like an 80mm and that feels way too tight for narrow streets and crowded sidewalks where I usually hang out. Then there is the 28mm pancake which looks awesome for size but is it actually sharp enough for the 24mp sensor on the R50 or is it gonna be soft? Or should I just bite the bullet and get an EF adapter for my old glass even though it makes the whole rig way bulkier and defeats the point of a small camera? I really want to keep it pocketable if possible.
Budget is strictly under 300 bucks. What is the actual best budget prime for street stuff that wont make me regret switching to mirrorless?
I totally hear you on the crop factor frustration. If you want to keep that R50 pocketable, you might want to consider the Canon RF 28mm f2.8 STM pancake lens. Its basically the only native option that actually keeps the setup small enough for a jacket pocket. At 28mm, you are looking at a 45mm equivalent, which is nearly a perfect normal focal length for street work. Be careful with expectations on corner sharpness tho. While its plenty sharp in the center, you might notice some vignetting and heavy distortion that the camera has to correct digitally. Its definitely sharp enough for that 24MP sensor, but dont expect L-series performance. Avoiding the adapter route is probably smart if your goal is portability. Adding the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R plus an old EF lens makes the R50 feel really front-heavy and kinda defeats why you bought a mirrorless body. If 45mm equivalent feels too tight, the Canon RF 16mm f2.8 STM is another budget option under $300, but 25mm equivalent is ultra-wide for street and might look a bit distorted if you arent careful with your levels. For Chicago streets, the 28mm is likely your best bet for keeping things light and fast. Just make sure to check the current firmware on your R50 to ensure the lens corrections are fully up to date for that specific glass... it helps a lot with the pancake.
I definitely agree that native glass is the move here. I remember hauling a heavy adapter setup through Millennium Park and it just killed the fun of having a compact body. The focus speed on those newer small primes is surprisingly snappy too, which youll definitely need if youre trying to catch people moving quickly on the sidewalks near the Loop.
