Can someone tell me which speedlites actually fire on the Canon T7 because I just realized mine doesnt have the center contact pin on the hot shoe? Ive been shooting for about five years now mostly with an old 70D and decided to grab a T7 as a backup for a family reunion next month but none of my older Yongnuo units will trigger. Its super frustrating because I didnt even think to check for that before buying it. I need something reliable with TTL support but I dont want to spend a fortune on a high end Canon brand flash right now. Looking to keep it under 150 bucks if possible. Are the newer Godox models compatible with this weird crippled mount or am I stuck buying the expensive 430EX?
Canon really threw a wrench in things by ditching that universal sync pin on the T7 shoe. Basically, older flashes rely on that big center contact to tell them when to fire, but these newer entry-level bodies require a specific digital handshake through the smaller E-TTL pins. If the flash firmware doesnt recognize that specific data packet over the sync line, it just sits there like a brick. Since you want to stay under 150 bucks, the Godox TT350C Mini TTL Flash is probably your best bet. It is way more affordable than the Canon brand stuff and fully supports the T7 pinout out of the box. It runs on two AA batteries and has a guide number of 36 at ISO 100, which is plenty for family indoor shots. The recycle time is about 2.2 seconds. It fits the compact body of a T7 really well without feeling top-heavy. If you can stretch the budget a tiny bit or find one used, the Godox V860III-C TTL Li-ion Flash is a much more powerful alternative with a lithium battery. It has a guide number of 60 and handles heat better during bursts. Both of these use the updated Godox logic that accounts for the missing center pin. Another route is finding a used Canon Speedlite 270EX II Flash which is super basic but definitely works since it is native hardware. Just make sure you specifically get the C version if going with Godox. If you need help with the sub-menus for TTL exposure compensation adjustments just let me know... it can be a bit of a learning curve with that T7 interface.
Yeah that missing pin is a massive headache if you arent prepared for it. I ran into the same issue when I grabbed a T7 for a lightweight travel setup. You definitely arent stuck with the overpriced Canon units though. I have been very satisfied with the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon lately. It handles the pinless hot shoe perfectly because Godox updated their firmware specifically for those entry level bodies. Here are my direct recommendations that work well:
