Top tripod recommendations for heavy Canon EOS 1D X setups?

Ive been shooting with the 1D X for a few years now and usually I just handhold everything but I recently started doing more long exposure stuff near the coast in Oregon and my old travel tripod just isnt cutting it anymore. The vibration when the mirror flips is insane and the legs feel like theyre gonna buckle under the weight of the 400mm prime.

I need something beefy that can handle 20 lbs without drifting or shaking every time a breeze hits. My budget is around 900 bucks and I need to buy it before my trip to the Tetons next month. What are you guys using for these heavy brick bodies?

TL;DR: Look at the Leofoto LM-364C Summit Series Carbon Fiber Tripod and the RRS BH-55 Ball Head with Full Size Lever Release. Ive used 1D bodies for years and they are total tanks. For a 400mm prime, you definitely want 36mm legs minimum. The Leofoto is a decent option since it fits your 900 dollar budget while staying solid for heavy loads. I personally suggest a systematic style tripod without a center column. Those columns are just vibration magnets for long exposures in windy spots. It works much better for heavy kits. Let me know if you want more info on how the leg locks hold up in salt water tho. Quick tips:

  • Hang your pack from the apex hook to add mass in high winds.
  • Make sure your tripod plate is tight since 1D X torque can kinda twist some plates...

Building on the earlier suggestion, make sure to consider Benro Mach3 9X Carbon Fiber Series 4 TMA48CXL legs and a Sirui K-40X 54mm Ball Head. You might want to be careful with torsional rigidity.
