Picked up the R8 for a last minute trip to Patagonia leaving Thursday and realized my old Manfrotto kit is just way too bulky for those 10-mile hikes... really need something super light that still handles long exposures since this body lacks IBIS. What compact travel tripods do you guys recommend for the R8 under $300?

Building on the earlier suggestion, winds in Patagonia are brutal! I once had a light stand tip over near Fitz Roy and barely caught my rig... honestly terrifying. Since the R8 lacks IBIS, you need something rock solid. Check out:

I learned the hard way that super lightweight can be risky in high winds. Took a flimsy stick to the coast once and almost lost my kit... honestly scary stuff. For your R8, i suggest:

^ This. Also, been thinking about your Patagonia trip and honestly... the wind there is no joke. I've spent years shooting in places like that and i've seen plenty of "travel" tripods just tip right over. Since that R8 doesnt have IBIS, you're gonna be relying entirely on those legs for those long exposures.

  • Go with Benro Carbon Fiber Tripods if you want something that lasts
  • Look into the Vanguard VEO travel lines
  • Stay away from anything that feels too plastic-y or light I've tried many different setups over the years and i usually find that a solid carbon set from Benro is the way to go. You can't really go wrong with their stuff. It's saved my gear more than once when the gusts picked up in the mountains. Just get the sturdiest one they have that fits your budget and dont look back.

Building on the earlier suggestion, ive tried many setups over the years. Honestly, just search YouTube for R8 travel tripods. I saw a video recently that covers everything you need to know.
