so i got this canon eos rebel t7 a few months ago because i wanted to take better pictures than my phone can do but i'm really struggling with the lighting indoors. every time i use the little pop-up flash that comes on the camera everyone looks super washed out and kind of like ghosts plus it makes those creepy red eyes which i hate. i was trying to take some practice shots of my cats and it was just a mess lol.
i started looking into those big external flashes you see photographers using at weddings and stuff because i have my cousins graduation coming up in about three weeks and they asked me to take some pro shots for them. i dont want to let them down but i have no idea where to start with this. my budget is pretty tight like maybe 100 or 150 dollars max because i already spent so much on the camera itself and i still need to buy a bag and stuff.
the thing is i keep seeing people talk about the t7 having some kind of issue with third party flashes? i was reading some forum and they mentioned a center pin being missing on this specific model and now im just totally confused and scared to buy the wrong thing. my logic was that any flash with the metal bottom part would just slide on and work but apparently that isnt true? i looked at the canon branded ones and they are like way over my budget like 300 or 400 dollars which is insane.
i just need something that:
am i stuck buying the expensive canon ones or are there cheaper brands like godox or neewer that actually work with this specific camera? i live in a pretty small town so i have to order everything online and i really dont want to deal with returning stuff if it doesnt fit right. sorry if this is a really basic question but i am literally drowning in all these technical terms like ttl and sync speed and i just want my photos to look less terrible...
Late to the party but I just had to chime in because I have been through this exact same headache! I remember trying to help a student with their T7 last year and we spent forever wondering why their old gear was dead... it really makes you want to pull your hair out when brands do that! But honestly, dont panic because there are amazing options that wont break your budget or your spirit. You absolutely want to look at Godox gear because they were the first ones to really fix this center pin issue with firmware. I love the Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon for people starting out. It fits your budget perfectly and is a total beast! It has TTL which is basically like having an auto mode for your flash. The camera and flash talk to each other to figure out the power for you, so no math required. I used a similar setup for a family event recently and it was fantastic for capturing quick moments without fiddling with dials. Quick tip: when you get it, dont point it straight at your cats or the graduates. Tilt the head up and bounce the light off a white ceiling. It creates this beautiful, soft glow that looks way more expensive than it is. Also, check out the website FlashHavoc if you ever get stuck. Its basically the bible for finding out what gear works with specific cameras. It saved me so many times when I was first learning the ropes. You are gonna kill it at that graduation!
You definitely need to be careful with the T7 because Canon removed that center pin to make it harder to use cheaper gear. It is super frustrating. I would suggest staying away from any generic universal flash because they literally wont fire on your camera. If you want something reliable that works without a headache, look at the Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon. Godox updated their gear specifically to handle the missing pin issue on the T7. Just make sure you get the version with the C at the end for Canon. It has TTL which basically lets the camera set the flash power automatically so you dont have to do any math. Just be really sure the listing mentions the T7 specifically before you buy it so you dont end up having to return it.
