so i finally started booking some indoor events and weddings for next month and my 5D mark IV is great but i definitely need a real flash now instead of just bumping the iso. i spent all night looking at reviews and everyone talks about the canon 600ex-rt ii but its like 500 bucks and that feels steep right now. i saw the godox v1 and the round head looks cool but i read some forum posts saying they overheat during long shoots which would be a nightmare for a wedding day. im located in a pretty rural area so i cant really go into a store and test them out myself. does anyone use a specific flash with their 5d4 that isnt gonna break the bank but still has reliable ttl?

Unfortunately, native Canon speedlites are just overpriced for most wedding work. I had issues with the V1 overheating during receptions which was quite a letdown. These are better options:

Quick thought while I am waiting for some exports... honestly i have been in your shoes and weddings are stressful enough without worrying about gear failing. If you want something that basically never dies and uses standard batteries, definitely look at the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon. I keep a couple of these as my main workhorses for the 5D4 and they are solid.

  • They are way cheaper than the V1 or Canon versions.
  • Uses AA batteries which is actually a plus if you are in a rural area and forget to charge a proprietary pack.
  • The TTL is surprisingly accurate for the price point. I usually pair mine with Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA Rechargeable Batteries and they last through most of a reception. If you ever want to get the flash off the camera, just grab a Godox XPro-C TTL Wireless Flash Trigger later on. Its much better to have two cheaper reliable units than one expensive one that might fail mid-ceremony... trust me, having a backup is everything.
