I just got the Canon R50 because everyone said it was good for beginners but honestly I have no idea how to use it yet. Im going to Japan in three weeks for my first big solo trip and I really want to take good pictures but I literally dont even know what else I need to buy. I only have about $200 left for extra gear so I cant go crazy. Do I need a special bag or extra batteries? The battery seems kinda small and I dont want it dying while I'm out eating ramen or something lol. Sorry if this is a really basic question but what are the absolute must-have things I should pack so I dont regret it later?

Congrats on picking up the R50! Its an amazing choice for Japan and you are going to have an incredible time! To keep you within that $200 budget while ensuring you dont miss any shots, I recommend focusing on power and storage stability:

  • Canon LP-E17 Lithium-Ion Battery Pack
  • This is basically mandatory. The R50 is very compact, which means the battery life is limited. Having a spare in your pocket while exploring is totally essential.
  • SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card
  • You really need a reliable, fast card. This specific model handles the R50 data rates perfectly and prevents any lag when you are taking photos. Focusing on these two items is honestly the most efficient way to spend that money. Japan is so photogenic, just make sure the camera stays powered and ready to go!

I spent a good bit of time digging into the R50 technical specs before I took mine out for a spin, and I am very satisfied with how it handles as long as you dont bottleneck it with bad storage. Since you are on a budget, my biggest warning is to avoid buying the most expensive SD cards. The R50 uses a UHS-I slot, so if you buy a high-end V60 or V90 card, you are basically throwing money away because the camera hardware cannot physically utilize those faster write speeds. Stick to these technical basics to stay safe and efficient:

  • Look for a V30 rated card with at least a 170MB/s read speed. It is plenty for the 24.2MP files and 4K video.
  • Be extremely cautious of fake SD cards on big marketplace sites; a failing card will corrupt every single photo from your trip.
  • Check your power bank specs for Power Delivery (PD) compatibility. The R50 is picky and wont charge from old-school USB-A ports easily.
  • Grab a simple microfiber cloth because Japan can be quite humid or rainy depending on where you are. I am very happy with how a standard V30 setup performs without lag. Also, definitely dont buy generic third-party batteries for this specific model yet. Canon has a chip in their batteries that sometimes makes the camera act weird or show incorrect power percentages if it doesnt recognize the brand. Staying OEM for power and being smart about your card speed will save you a lot of headache without blowing your $200.
