I am freaking out a bit because I am supposed to shoot my cousins backyard wedding in three weeks and all I have is the kit lens for my R10. I need a prime for those blurry backgrounds but my budget is super tight like strictly under $400. I am looking at the RF 50mm f1.8 stm which is dirt cheap but I heard it might be too wide or not bokeh-y enough for portraits on a crop sensor? Or maybe I should stretch for the RF 85mm f2 macro but thats double the price and I dont know if I can swing it by then. Is the 50mm good enough or am I gonna regret not having the extra reach? I just want her to look good and not distorted...
I've tried many lenses, and in my experience, the Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM is your best friend for a backyard wedding. Over the years I have realized that 80mm equivalent field of view on the R10 is basically the gold standard for portraits. It wont distort her face at all. Quick tip: keep her 10 feet from the background for max blur. You really dont need to overspend here.
I've had issues with the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM being slow to focus when the light drops. Its honestly not as good as expected for a wedding. While the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM has better bokeh, its over your budget and feels bulky on the R10. Unfortunately, budget RF glass is kinda disappointing tho... just keep your expectations low if you go the cheap route.
Honestly that fifty is amazing on your sensor! I love it for portraits. Just watch out for a few things so you dont mess up the big day:
