Hey everyone! I just upgraded to a Canon EOS R6 for my freelance video projects, and I’m absolutely loving the autofocus. However, I’m finding it tough to mount my external monitor and a shotgun mic without a proper cage. Since I just spent a lot on the camera itself, I’m looking for a budget-friendly option that doesn't compromise on quality. I’ve seen some SmallRig and Tilta options, but I’m worried about cable port access and overall weight. I really need something with a built-in Arca-Swiss plate and some Arri-style locating holes for my top handle. Does anyone have a favorite affordable cage for the R series that actually holds up well in the field?
I compared 8Sinn Canon EOS R5 / R6 Cage vs Neewer Camera Cage for Canon EOS R5 R6. 8Sinn: better machining/access. Neewer: heavy. Honestly sooo happy with 8Sinn!
> I’ve seen some SmallRig and Tilta options, but I’m worried about cable port access... Yo! Late to the party but I totally get the budget struggle—I actually used zip-ties for my first rig lol. So basically the consensus is that machining matters for port access. Tbh, the SmallRig Black Mamba Camera Cage for Canon EOS R5 & R6 3233 is amazing. It’s got the Arca-Swiss base and Arri 3/8"-16 holes u need while staying super light. Best value for the R6 imo!!
Yo, congrats on the R6 upgrade! Honestly, that autofocus is like magic, right?? I've been shooting R-series stuff for a long time now, and I totally feel u on the cage struggle. When I first started rigging out mine, I was super worried about the extra weight and blocking the screen flip, but it's really not that bad once you get used to it. In my experience, you really cant beat the SmallRig Camera Cage for Canon EOS R5 & R6 2982B. I've had mine for like two years and it's basically indestructible. It's got that built-in Arca-Swiss plate on the bottom which is honestly a MUST if you're switching between a tripod and a gimbal quickly. Plus, it has the Arri locating holes on top so your handle won't twist around while you're moving... literally the most annoying thing ever when that happens lol. For your monitor and mic, I usually pair it with the SmallRig Swivel and Tilt Monitor Mount with ARRI-Style Locating Pins 2903B. It keeps everything super low profile. Port access is actually fine on the R6 side; I've never had a problem plugging in my monitor or headphones. It's way lighter than the older Tilta setups I've messed with, too. So yeah, if you're looking for budget-friendly but professional, SmallRig is the way to go imo. I’ve been very satisfied with how it holds up in the field, even on long wedding days or messy doc shoots. Anyway, hope that helps! gl with the build!
