Are there any recommended cages for the Canon EOS R6 Mark II?

So I just picked up the R6 Mark II a couple weeks ago for some music video work I'm doing around Chicago and man the ergonomics are great but I really need a cage to mount my Ninja V and a top handle. I've been looking at the SmallRig options because everyone talks about them but I'm kinda stuck between the standard one and that Black Mamba version. I read some reviews saying the Black Mamba is super sleek but then someone on a different thread mentioned it makes it harder to reach the top dials if you have bigger hands which is a worry for me since I'm constantly swapping settings mid-shoot. My logic was to go for the most compact thing possible but if I cant actually use the camera then what's the point right?

I also saw the Tilta cage which looks really nice and has that cooling fan attachment option but I don't know if that's overkill for what I'm doing. Most of my shoots are like 4-5 hours at most. I'm trying to stay under like 130 bucks for the cage itself because I still need to buy the handle and some rails later. One thing that really confuses me is the compatibility between the original R6 and the Mark II because some listings say they fit both but I've heard the body on the Mark II is just slightly different near the top plate and some older cages might block the new photo/video switch. I dont want to order something and then have to deal with shipping it back if it doesnt clear that switch properly.

Then there is the Kondor Blue stuff which looks amazing in that space gray but it seems way more expensive once you add the accessories. I was thinking maybe I should just stick to the basic SmallRig one since it has more mounting points but then I worry about the weight. I'm usually handheld for most of the day and every ounce starts to matter after hour three. If anyone has experience with the specific clearance for the R6 II top dial and the on/off switch I'd love to hear it. I just want something that feels like part of the camera and not some awkward metal box sitting on top of it. Does anyone here actually use the Mark II with a cage that doesnt get in the way of the controls? I'm looking for something that feels solid but wont turn the camera into a giant brick...

I picked up the SmallRig 4159 Cage for Canon EOS R6 Mark II and it works. I'd skip the Black Mamba because the clearance for the top dials is pretty tight... which is risky for fast shoots. This version fits the Mark II switch perfectly. Its a decent option that stays under your price limit and has plenty of mounting holes for your monitor and top handle.

Regarding what #2 said about "Sadly, most cages I tried felt like handling a sharp brick tho," that's usually because some brands don't chamfer the edges well enough. If you're trying to stay under $130 while leaving room for handles and rails, the Neewer CA011 Camera Cage for Canon EOS R6 Mark II is a solid technical choice. It's much cheaper than the boutique options but the specs show it's built specifically for the Mark II's revised control layout. The technical reality is that the Mark II moved the photo/video switch to the left side, so you absolutely can't use an original R6 cage without it blocking the toggle. This Neewer one has a slim profile on the top plate so you won't struggle with the dials. Ngl, spending the extra cash on a SmallRig 2165C ARRI Locating Top Handle with the money you save is a smarter move for music videos. It keeps the center of gravity low so the rig feels less like an awkward box during long handheld shoots.

  • Sadly, most cages I tried felt like handling a sharp brick tho.
  • Just grab any newer Tilta rig.
  • You dont want something that blocks your dials...
