Are there any good cage options for the Canon EOS R7 that actually fit right? I've been rigging up cameras since the 5D Mark II days so I'm not a total newbie but man, the shape of the R7 is weird. I grabbed a cheapo generic cage last week for a shoot I have coming up in Florida next month and it literally blocks the battery door and makes the top dial impossible to turn. Super annoying.
I'm looking for something under $100 if possible but I need solid mounting points for my Atomos Ninja V and a decent top handle since I'll be doing a lot of low angle stuff for a wildlife project. Does the SmallRig one have any wiggle or is it solid? I've heard mixed things about the fit on this specific body...
To add to the point above: I've been running the Ulanzi Falcam F22 F38 Quick Release Camera Cage for Canon EOS R7 for my wildlife stuff lately and I'm super satisfied. After trying two cheap brands that blocked the dial, this one finally fit right.
Just found this thread and wanted to chime in since I have rigged a dozen of these R-series bodies over the years. Before I suggest a specific path, I would like to ask: are you planning to use an HDMI cable clamp with your monitor? The R7 ports are notoriously fragile, and if you are doing wildlife work in the field, that is going to be your biggest failure point long before a dial gets stuck. I would suggest keeping these factors in mind:
^ This. Also, I am so excited to see another wildlife shooter here! I have been absolutely loving my Canon EOS R7 for birds lately, but the rigging process was definitely a learning curve. Before I share what worked for me, could you clarify if you are using the Atomos Ninja V with a heavy battery or just the slim ones? I found that the top-heavy weight really tests the limits of the mounting points on the camera body. My journey with this camera has taught me a few things:
> Does the SmallRig one have any wiggle or is it solid? Unfortunately, I had issues with that basic SmallRig cage too... it felt kinda flexy once I loaded it up with a heavy monitor and a side handle. If you're really looking for solid without breaking the bank, I ended up going with the Niceyrig Camera Cage for Canon EOS R7 and then I basically modded it myself. I screwed a SmallRig NATO Rail 1409 onto the top because most built-in rails are total trash and dont give you enough room to balance the rig. Actually, talking about your Florida trip... you really gotta watch out for the humidity down there. I was in the Everglades last summer with my R7 and the sensor kept fogging up inside the lens mount because of the crazy temp change from the car AC to the swamp. Spent half the morning just waiting for it to clear up while a gator was literally sitting five feet away. Super frustrating when the gear lets you down like that. Anyway, the Niceyrig setup with the extra rail is your best bet for under a hundred bucks. But yeah.
