Is Canon EOS 5D Mark IV still a good camera in 2025?

I'm considering whether to stick with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV or upgrade to a newer model in 2025. I've heard mixed opinions about the longevity of DSLRs versus mirrorless systems. As a serious hobbyist, I want a camera that will last and perform well for both photography and occasional video work.

What are your thoughts on the 5D Mark IV's performance in 2025? Does it still hold up against newer models like the EOS R5? Are there specific features that make it a better choice for certain types of photography? I’d love to hear from anyone who has experience with the 5D Mark IV recently or has made the switch to mirrorless.

Re: "Saw this thread earlier and it actually makes..."

  • Randall's right on the money about the repair situation. Honestly, I had a similar scare where a local shop quoted me $500 just to look at a sticky dial on my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. I decided to just open it up myself using a guide I found online. It worked out, but man, those ribbon cables are tiny... you really gotta be careful or you'll brick the whole thing. If you're gonna keep running this tank in 2025, you might want to consider these tips:
  • Grab a dedicated VSGO Camera Sensor Cleaning Kit and learn to use it yourself instead of sending it in.
  • Always keep a spare Canon LP-E6NH Li-ion Battery because third-party ones can be hit or miss with the newer firmware. I would suggest doing your own minor maintenance because the official service centers are definitely pushing us toward the R series. Just watch out for the weather sealing when you put it back together or you'll lose that ruggedness that makes the 5D what it is.

Saw this thread earlier and it actually makes me kinda sad. @Reply #2 - good point! about those who want to stick with DSLRs, but honestly? It feels like a losing battle at this point. I've been using the 5D line since the Mark II and the way things are going in 2025 is just frustrating.

  • Companies dont care about us anymore. Its like they are forcing us into mirrorless by making EF repairs cost a fortune. I had a shutter issue recently and the quote was basically the price of a used body. Its such a scam.
  • The tech gap is just too wide now. I tried a friends newer setup and coming back to my 5D IV felt like using a brick. The eye tracking on other brands makes our old AF points look prehistoric.
  • Prices for everything are just ridiculous now. Whether its new mirrorless gear or trying to maintain these old workhorses, it feels like we are just being squeezed for every cent while the build quality across the board feels like its going downhill. It drives me crazy because I love the feel of the 5D, but unfortunately, it just doesnt feel like a smart place to be anymore.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is still a good camera in 2025, especially for those who prioritize image quality and specific usability features. However, potential buyers should weigh the benefits against the growing advantages of newer mirrorless systems and consider their existing lens compatibility.

The 5D Mark IV still holds its own in 2025, especially for stills. Discussions on its relevance persist, proving its staying power. While mirrorless offers advantages, the 5D Mark IV delivers excellent image quality and a robust build. Consider your needs: if high-resolution stills are your priority, it's a solid choice. For advanced video features, mirrorless options like the R5 might be more appealing. Several users still find the 5D Mark IV a reliable workhorse. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your specific workflow and budget.
