Looking for an all-in-one lens for my Canon 5D Mark IV. Mostly shooting landscapes and some portraits. Budget is around $1500. What's the best all-rounder you'd recommend at that price point?

Yeah, focusing on the versatility is definitely the right move for a workhorse body like the 5D Mark IV, but you really have to consider the technical trade-offs when you are looking for that one-lens-does-all solution. If you are shooting landscapes, you need to be wary of how these zooms handle high-frequency details across the frame.

  • Watch out for heavy barrel distortion at the wide end, which can lead to significant resolution loss once you apply software corrections in post-processing.
  • Be mindful of chromatic aberration; some of these all-rounders show heavy lateral CA in high-contrast transitions, which is a nightmare for clean landscape horizons.
  • Pay close attention to focus breathing if you plan on doing any video work, as many of these mid-range zooms change focal length significantly when pulling focus. I mean, the 5D IV sensor is still quite demanding at 30.4 megapixels. If the glass isnt resolving enough line pairs per millimeter, youre basically wasting that sensors potential. Honestly, the micro-contrast on many zooms falls off at the edges, so definitely run some brick wall tests to check for decentering or soft corners before your return window closes.

Been using this for years, no complaints

Hey! I've been rocking the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 on my 5D Mark IV for years. It's not 'perfect', but the image quality is solid for landscapes and portraits. I picked it up used for around $700. Honestly, for the price, it's a workhorse. You might find sharper glass, but this one does the job without breaking the bank.

Consider the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 G2. Tack sharp, and you'll save a few hundred!

Hey! Tamron's 24-70mm gets good landscape reviews. I'd check user reviews on sites like B&H or Adorama first though, see if it fits *your* needs. $1200ish, maybe?

Used Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 G2. Great image quality, saves you serious cash over new!

Tamron's all-in-one is good, but be careful with the zoom lock; had issues around 2019.
