Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded to a Canon 5D Mark IV after using my old Rebel T6 for years. I found a great deal on a used body with low shutter count, and I am absolutely loving the full-frame look so far. However, I am realizing that my old bag of tricks might not be enough for this professional beast of a camera.

I primarily do event photography and some occasional landscape work, so I want to make sure I have the right setup to keep things running smoothly during long days. I have noticed that the 30.4MP files are quite a bit larger than what I am used to, and I am a little confused about the best storage workflow since it has both the CF and SD card slots. I want to make sure I am not creating a bottleneck with slow cards or losing data because I chose the wrong brand.

I am currently looking for recommendations on:

    • High-speed memory cards that can actually handle the 4K video bitrates without overheating.

    • Battery solutions or grips, especially if they help with the balance of heavier L-series glass.

    • Any specific screen protectors or cleaning kits you trust for this specific sensor.

I really want to invest in gear that actually improves my workflow rather than just buying random gadgets. What are the absolute must-have accessories you guys use with your 5D Mark IV to get the best performance?

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV remains a legendary DSLR workhorse in 2026. To get the most out of its 30.4MP sensor and 4K video capabilities, focusing on power, high-speed storage, and ergonomics is essential.

🔋 Power & Ergonomics

  • Canon BG-E20 Battery Grip: This is almost mandatory for professional work. It doubles your battery life by holding two LP-E6 series batteries and provides much better ergonomics for vertical (portrait) shooting

  • Spare LP-E6NH Batteries: These are the newer versions of the original LP-E6. They offer higher capacity and are backward compatible with the 5D IV.

  • Dedicated L-Bracket: Brands like Really Right Stuff or ProMediaGear make custom-fit L-brackets that allow you to switch from landscape to portrait on a tripod without losing your center of axis.

💾 Storage & Speed

Since the 5D Mark IV has dual slots (CF and SD), you should utilize both for redundancy:

🛠️ Essential Utilities

Would you like me to look up the current prices for any of these specific items or suggest a camera bag that fits this setup?

Ngl, the 5D IV is a beast but that dual slot setup can be tricky. Since the SD slot is limited to UHS-I speeds, it will always be the bottleneck if you are writing to both cards at once. I usually grab the ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 128GB anyway because even though the camera doesnt hit those max speeds, it makes transferring files to my laptop way faster after the shoot. For power, honestly, try to stick with the Canon LP-E6N Lithium-Ion Battery whenever possible. I have tried cheaper third-party brands but they often dont communicate the remaining charge accurately to the camera, which is a nightmare during an event. Also, definitely pick up a Giottos Rocket Air Blaster Large. Full frame sensors are total dust magnets compared to your old Rebel, and a quick blast of air before a lens change saves so much time in post-production. It is probably the most used thing in my bag tbh.

Congrats on the upgrade! The 5D Mark IV is a legend. Since you are looking to save some cash, dont feel like you have to buy the most expensive cards out there. I have had great luck with the Lexar Professional 1066x 128GB CompactFlash for the main slot because it is way cheaper than some others but handles the 4K bitrates just fine. For the SD slot, just grab a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I as a mirror backup. Regarding the grip, the official Canon one is way overpriced imo. I use the Vello BG-C14 Battery Grip for Canon 5D Mark IV and it works perfectly for a fraction of the cost. It really helps balance out those heavy L-series lenses during event shoots. Also, definitely get a pack of Expert Shield Screen Protector Crystal Clear for Canon 5D Mark IV to keep that screen mint. You dont need to spend a fortune to get a pro setup...
