I just got this Canon R8 because everyone said it was a great first full frame camera and I really like it so far but I am having a huge problem with the battery life. Im supposed to shoot my cousins outdoor wedding in Chicago in about two weeks and Im honestly panicking a little bit because I was practicing at the park yesterday and the battery died so fast. Like maybe two hours of just taking some random shots? Its way smaller than I expected. I saw people talking about these things called battery grips that you attach to the bottom so you can hold it better and have more power but when I search for them I get really confused. Some websites say they work for the R8 and then I read a comment saying they dont actually work because the R8 doesnt have some kind of electronic connector thingy inside the battery compartment. I dont really understand how that works or if the camera even allows it. Im sorry if this is a super basic thing to ask I literally just started learning all this last month and everything is still a bit overwhelming.
I have maybe 100 or 150 dollars left in my budget for accessories before the wedding so I cant afford anything super expensive but I need something that actually works and wont fry my new camera. I saw some brands like Neewer or some other ones on Amazon but I dont know if they are safe or if they actually let you use two batteries at the same time or if its just a plastic handle to make the camera bigger. I really dont want to be fumbling around swapping batteries every hour during the vows because I know I will mess it up and miss something important.
Does anyone actually use a grip on their R8? Do you have to plug a cable into the side of the camera to make the buttons work? I just need something that makes the battery last way longer for this wedding...
Unfortunately, the R8 grip options are basically a letdown. I tried a couple of setups and they all have annoying quirks.
So I've been shooting Canon since the old film days and honestly, the R8 battery situation is its biggest flaw. You're not crazy... it really does die that fast, especially if you leave the screen on or use the viewfinder a lot. The reason those Amazon grips look confusing is because the R8 literally isnt designed for a real electronic grip. Most pro cameras have pins inside the battery compartment to talk to a grip, but the R8 is missing them entirely. Any grip you find online is gonna be a dumb grip that uses a dummy battery and a messy cable hanging out the side to make the buttons work. It looks janky and usually feels like cheap plastic. In my experience, you're way better off spending that $150 on these things instead:
> I saw some brands like Neewer or some other ones on Amazon but I dont know if they are safe Unfortunately, none of them work the way youd hope. I tried a generic grip on a similar body once and it was a total disaster... it felt flimsy and kept losing connection. Since the R8 lacks internal pins, those grips use a clunky external cable that just gets in the way. Are you dead set on a grip, or would you consider just carrying spare batteries in a pouch?
