So I finally pulled the trigger on the Canon R8 because I wanted that full frame look without the massive bulk of the R6 or R5 but now I am hitting a wall with accessories. I am leaving for a trip to Japan in three weeks—mostly Kyoto for the temples and then some night shots in Tokyo—and I really need to dial in my setup like yesterday. I am trying to stay under 500 dollars for both a tripod and a bag if possible but I can stretch it a bit if the quality is actually worth the jump.

I have been looking at the Peak Design travel tripod because of the size but man that price tag for the carbon one is just painful. I saw the aluminum version but then I read a few reviews saying it vibrates too much in the wind and since the R8 doesnt have IBIS I am worried my long exposures are gonna look like mush. I also checked out the Ulanzi Zero Y which looks similar and is way cheaper but some people on YouTube say the center column is annoying to use and the legs feel a bit thin. I am just confused if I should go for something super light or if I will regret it the second there is a breeze.

For the bag I am even more lost. I want something that looks like a normal backpack so I dont stand out too much on the subway. I saw the Wandrd Prvke 21L and it looks cool but is it too big for just the R8 and maybe two lenses? I am mostly carrying the 24-105 STM and the 35mm prime. I was thinking about a Peak Design sling but I am worried my shoulder is gonna be killing me after walking 20,000 steps a day around Tokyo. Maybe a smaller backpack is the way to go?

Does anyone have a setup they love for the R8 specifically since it is such a small body compared to the other R series? I want to keep things light but still functional for some night photography...

OMG you are gonna have the best time! I did a similar trip and the Brevite Jumper Camera Backpack was a total lifesaver! It looks like a normal bag so you wont stand out at all. For the tripod, I saved a ton using the Manfrotto Element MII Aluminum Travel Tripod. Its sturdy enough for night shots and way cheaper than Peak Design! I love how much extra cash I had for ramen!

Jumping in to agree on the PD aluminum. I tried to make it work on a trip to Scotland and unfortunately it was a total letdown. The vibration was a nightmare and my long exposures were basically ruined because the legs are just too thin for any real wind. Since your R8 lacks IBIS, you really cant afford that movement. Swapping it for the Sirui AM-254 Carbon Fiber Tripod and a Sirui K-10X Ball Head made a massive difference and its way cheaper than the carbon PD. For the bag, the Wandrd was just too stiff for me after 20,000 steps. Check out the Tenba Fulton v2 14L Backpack instead. It looks like a normal canvas bag and fits the R8 gear perfectly without looking like a target on the subway. Quick tip: Always use a 2-second timer. Even a light touch on travel tripods causes shake.
