Does anyone know which free apps actually work best for keeping track of group gift lists without being super glitchy?

My huge family reunion in Chicago is coming up in three weeks and I am so excited to finally get everyone together but the gift situation is gonna be a total nightmare if I dont organize it soon lol. There are like 15 of us coming from all over the country and we want to do a big communal list for the kids and the grandparents. I spent all morning looking stuff up and found Giftster and Elfster but honestly I am kinda stuck.

Elfster seems like its just for secret santa draws where you only buy for one person and we need something where we can all see everything and just claim items so we dont buy the same lego set twice. Giftster looked okay but the interface feels like it hasnt been updated since 2005 and I dont want my tech-illiterate uncle getting frustrated and giving up halfway through. Is there something cleaner that works on both iphone and android? I really need it to be free because I already spent way too much on the rental house and flights so I cant be asking people to pay for a premium subscription just to look at a list...

Unfortunately, I had issues with WishLeap during my sisters baby shower and it was a total letdown. The sync was so slow that half the gifts got double-bought... it was honestly embarrassing.

  • GiftHero is way better and looks modern.
  • Wishlist.com is super simple for the older folks. Just watch out for apps that force everyone to make accounts just to see the list.

I literally just saw this and man, I am in the exact same boat. I have been dealing with this exact nightmare for about three months now for our big family gathering this summer and honestly... nothing works right. I agree with the point about the sync lag being a total dealbreaker, because in my experience, that is where everything falls apart. Over the years I have tried so many free apps and they all end up being a massive headache for one reason or another. Here are the main issues I keep hitting:

  • Most free apps have a hidden cap on how many people can join a list before they demand a subscription fee.
  • The interfaces are usually so cluttered with ads that my older relatives get lost instantly.
  • Real-time syncing is almost non-existent so double-buying is basically guaranteed. I still havent found a solid answer and it is driving me crazy.

Building on the earlier suggestion about keeping it simple for the older crowd, I really think the GiftList Wish List App is the move here. It is free and handles the claim system way better than Elfster which is basically just for Secret Santa draws. The interface is clean enough that even your tech-challenged uncle should be able to navigate it without calling you every five minutes. Since you are watching the budget after booking the Chicago house, this keeps things cheap and effective. Some quick pros:

  • Shared lists without secret draws
  • Works on iOS and Android
  • No hidden fees or subscriptions If you want the absolute zero-effort budget route, just make a shared Google Sheet. Its free, people dont always need to download a new app, and you can see edits in real-time. Just have a column for Claimed By so nobody buys the same thing. TL;DR: GiftList Wish List App is the best dedicated free app for claimable lists, but a simple spreadsheet is the most cost-conscious and reliable choice for a big group.

Adding my two cents since I saw this about an hour after the last post. We had a massive Gatlinburg reunion last summer with about 20 people and I was honestly terrified of the gift situation until we tried Whimful. I am usually not great with new apps but this one was so easy and I was really satisfied with how it handled everything compared to the older stuff I had tried... A few reasons it worked for us:

  • It is totally free and did not bug people for subscriptions.
  • You can pull items from any store just by copying the link.
  • The claim system is instant so we didnt end up with three of the same lego sets. Everything was managed on my <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Apple+ iPhone+15+Pro+128GB&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=2222&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Apple iPhone 15 Pro 128GB while my older cousins used their Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and nobody complained about it being confusing. It is way better than Elfster for this because you can just see a master list instead of being assigned one person. Tbh, it really saved my sanity during that trip.

Been thinking about this thread for a few hours and honestly bagelandlox is totally right about how limited the big names are. Over the years I have tested dozens of these platforms for family logistics and it drives me crazy how the quality of software has just tanked. Every single free app nowadays is either a buggy mess or just a front to harvest your data and sell it to advertisers. It is such a scam. Honestly its ridiculous that we are still dealing with sync lag that causes double-buys in 2024. Like... how hard is it to handle a simple database update? Most of these devs are just lazy or they prioritize cramming in ads over making the core features actually work. It is basically impossible to find something that doesnt feel like a total cash grab or a high school coding project. Companies just dont care about the end user anymore and it makes organizing anything a massive headache. The whole situation is just garbage tbh.
