Any recommendations for free birthday wishlist apps that sync with friends?

My birthday is coming up next month and my sisters keep bugging me for a list because they always end up buying the same stuff for me. I looked at Elfster but it seems way too focused on Secret Santa stuff and I just want a regular wishlist my friends can follow. I also checked out Giftster but the interface is super clunky and looks like it was made in 2005 or something. I need something free since I just moved to a new apartment and I'm broke lol. Is there an app that lets people mark things as purchased without me seeing it? I just want it to be easy to sync up with my group...

In my experience trying many free ones, do you need a browser extension for one-click adding, or is just a mobile app for manually pasting links enough?

I have been thinking about your situation and I would suggest being quite careful with some of the smaller free apps you might find. A lot of them look sleek but they often have serious privacy flaws or they sell your contact list to third parties, which is a huge headache when you are just trying to share a list with family. Also, definitely make sure to check if the feature to hide purchased items is actually free. Some apps let you make the list for nothing but then they try to charge your friends a fee or force them to create a full profile just to mark something as bought. Since you mentioned being on a budget, I really recommend looking into the data policies first. One thing I have noticed is that some free apps stop syncing correctly if the list gets too long. Before I give my specific recommendation though, could you clarify if your sisters and friends are all on the same phone type? If you have a mix of Android and iPhone users, the syncing can get incredibly messy on certain platforms and I want to make sure I suggest something that actually works for everyone.

Just caught this thread and wanted to chime in since I spent way too much time testing these apps for my housewarming party last year. I actually ended up losing a bunch of data on one of those modern looking apps because it went offline without warning... super frustrating when you are on a budget and really need specific stuff for a new place. Before you settle on something like Share Product, I have a couple questions to narrow it down:

  • Are you mostly pulling links from big retailers like Amazon or Target, or are you looking to add stuff from small niche sites?
  • Does the app need to have a social feed where people can comment on items, or do you just want a clean list where they click buy and leave? I have found that some handle the surprise aspect much better than others without charging a premium for it, but it really depends on what stores you use most.
