so i finally upgraded to the R5 Mark II and man this thing eats batteries for breakfast. i have a big wedding gig coming up in miami in three weeks and i really need that extra grip for the vertical shutter and the peace of mind.

im looking at the standard BG-R20 versus the CF-R20EP cooling fan version. the fan one is way more expensive and i am already pushing my budget after the body purchase but i worry about the heat down here. is the fan actually worth the huge markup for outdoor shoots or should i just stick with the basic grip and buy more spare batteries instead?

Miami heat is no joke. You really dont want a camera lockout during the ceremony, so the Canon CF-R20EP Cooling Fan Battery Grip is the safest choice for keeping internals cool. It is pricey tho. The standard Canon BG-R20 Battery Grip is a reliable option if youre only shooting stills. Just grab extra Canon LP-E6P Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery packs. This body is thirsty.

> Miami heat is no joke. Like someone mentioned, that humidity is a total beast. Tbh, unless you are pushing heavy 8K video all day, the cooling fan is probably overkill for a wedding. I have found that the older Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip works just fine on the Mark II and saves a ton of cash. Just make sure you populate it with the Canon LP-E6P Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery to keep your high-speed performance intact... those new cells are the real secret sauce for the R5 II.

Re: "> Miami heat is no joke. Like someone..." - yeah, it is brutal. Unfortunately, that cooling grip is a total disappointment given the price tag. I had issues with the added bulk and it just wasnt as good as expected for long wedding days.

  • flip the LCD screen out to vent - keep the body in the shade Honestly, save that cash for something more useful.

^ This. Also, madison is totally right about the bulk. I’ve done those marathon wedding days in the heat, and by hour eight, every extra ounce feels like a lead brick in your hand. Over the years, I've realized that the official 'pro' accessories usually have a massive markup that just isnt worth it if you're smart about your setup. tbh the fan is a gimmick for most wedding stuff. unless ur shooting 8k raw in direct sun for an hour straight, you wont see the benefit. I’ve found that being budget-conscious actually leads to a more reliable kit anyway because you can afford more redundancy. Instead of dropping half a grand on the Canon fan grip, I've had great luck with these for reliability on a budget:

  • Neewer BG-R10 Battery Grip for Canon EOS R5 is basically a clone and fits the new body just fine for way less cash.
  • Vello BG-C18 Battery Grip is another solid one that has never failed me during long shoots.
  • Anker 737 Power Bank 140W for fast USB-C charging between the ceremony and reception. I'd much rather have a few extra batteries and a high-speed portable charger than one overpriced grip that might still overheat anyway. Just keep that screen flipped out and you'll be golden...
