Which spare batteries are most reliable for Canon R-series cameras?

Im literally panicking right now because I just realized my R6 Mark II eats through batteries like crazy and I have a huge wedding shoot in like ten days in Chicago. I thought the one it came with would be enough for a while but I did a practice run yesterday and it was dead before the reception even would have started. I was looking at the official Canon LP-E6NH ones but honestly eighty bucks for a single battery is just insane when I need at least three or four more to actually feel safe and not like my gear is gonna die mid-vows.

I did some digging online and saw people mentioning the Neewer ones and also those Wasabi Power packs. But then I read that some of these third party ones wont let the camera do the full 12fps or 40fps mechanical/electronic shutter speeds? Like the icon stays white instead of green or something? I really need that high speed for the kiss and the exit so if the battery limits the camera performance then its basically useless to me. Some other folks said the BM Premium ones are good but then I saw a review saying they got stuck in the slot because they swelled up after getting hot. That is literally my worst nightmare. I cant afford to buy four official Canon batteries right now because my budget is pretty tight after buying the 70-200mm lens last month.

Heres what I really need:

  • budget around $100 total for two or three batteries
  • must support the high speed continuous shooting mode (the green icon thing)
  • no scary "cannot communicate with battery" error messages popping up
  • reliable enough that they wont melt or swell in the heat

Are there any brands that actually work exactly like the Canon ones or am I just stuck spending $300 on name brand plastic? I'm so worried about the camera just cutting out during the ceremony or giving me some weird software lock because the chip in the battery isnt official...

I bought SmallRig LP-E6NH USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery for a huge shoot when I was broke. They actually support the green H+ icon and havent swelled up or failed me once yet.

Quick question first, are you shooting much 4K video or just stills? I've had issues with third-party stuff before.

  • honestly i'm in the exact same boat and it's been stressing me out for months now - i totally agree with the points about the price of the official Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery being a total joke - searching everywhere for a budget option that keeps the green H+ icon has just led to conflicting info - tbh still haven't found a solution and it's exhausting trying to save money without risking a fail mid-shoot

jumping in here because i totally get the stress! weddings are high stakes and that R6 Mark II is a beast but man does it love juice. if youre trying to save some cash, definitely check out the Watson LP-E6NH Li-Ion Battery 2250mAh. i have used them for a while now and they hold that green H+ icon way better than most generic stuff. they are amazing for the price! another huge budget tip... instead of four batteries, get one or two and then grab a Anker PowerCore III 19K 60W. you can literally plug your camera into it during the dinner break or while youre traveling between locations. it charges super fast over USB-C and basically gives you unlimited power for the reception. check out the battery comparison spreadsheets on the Fred Miranda forums too, those guys do deep dives into voltage that are super helpful. you are gonna kill it in Chicago!

Ugh, I am right there with you. Reading your post gave me literal heart palpitations because I was in the exact same position last summer. I had a triple-header weekend and realized my R6 was just devouring power way faster than my old DSLRs ever did. Honestly, the stress of watching that little battery bar drop during the ceremony is something I wouldnt wish on anyone. Seriously. In my experience, the third-party stuff is such a gamble:

  • I had one set that worked fine in the studio but failed in the heat
  • The communication errors always seem to pop up at the worst possible moment
  • Some of them just dont hold a charge after a few cycles It really sucks that we are forced to choose between the rent money and having reliable power. I totally get why you are panicking with the wedding coming up so fast. Just know you arent the only one dealing with this mess... it is a total headache for all of us shooting on these mirrorless bodies now. Good luck with the Chicago gig tho, you got this.
