I just bought a used Canon EOS 6D Mark II for my sisters wedding in October and I'm super confused about the battery situation. It seems to die really fast when I'm testing it out in my backyard. Someone at the camera shop mentioned getting a "battery grip" so I dont have to swap batteries as much but I have no idea what that even is or how it works. Is it just a bigger battery or a whole separate thing you screw on? My budget is pretty tight like maybe $50-70 max because the camera was expensive. Are there any cheap ones that wont break the camera? I really need something reliable for the wedding day...

Re: @Reply #2 - totally agree, but if you want something that feels a bit more like the original Canon build for cheap, check out the Vello BG-C16 Battery Grip for Canon 6D Mark II. Ive used Vello grips for years on my backup bodies and theyve never failed me at a gig. Just make sure you grab a Powerextra 2-Pack LP-E6N 2600mAh Batteries to fill it up. Having that extra juice makes a huge difference when youre shooting a ceremony and cant stop to fiddle with the door...

Honestly, you dont need to spend a fortune on the official Canon version to get good results. I've been using off-brand grips for like a decade and they work just fine for long wedding days. Basically, you just pop the battery door off your 6DII, slide the neck of the grip into the battery hole, and screw it tight to the tripod mount. It lets you run two batteries at once and gives you a vertical shutter button which is honestly a lifesaver for portraits. These are my go-to budget picks:

I totally agree with what the others said about that extra shutter button, it truly makes a world of difference for portraits. Had a moment to think about this more and I really gotta throw out a caution based on what Ive seen over the years with these off-brand units. Some of those budget grips have really finicky electronics. A few times I've seen them cause the camera to not even turn on because the grip didnt sit perfectly flush against the battery contacts. Basically, if you go with a cheaper brand, just make sure you test it for a few hours before the actual wedding. Dont wait until the day of to find out it has a bad connection! Sometimes they can cause the camera to lock up if the pins are slightly misaligned. Also, watch out for the screw wheel... if you over-tighten it, you can actually strip the threads or jam the whole thing. Just be gentle with the plastic parts and you should be good. ngl, it's definitely better than running out of power right as theyre cutting the cake, but reliability is key when you only get one shot at the moment.

@Reply #1 - good point! I've been really satisfied with the Neewer BG-E21 Vertical Battery Grip for my setup. It works well and feels sturdy enough for pro work. Basically, it lets you use two Canon LP-E6N Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery packs at once. Having that extra shutter button for vertical portraits is a huge plus during weddings too. Its definitely the best way to stay under budget while staying reliable.
