Finally got my hands on a 90D and I am so stoked to take it out! Im planning a big hiking trip to the Swiss Alps in about three weeks so I need to get my kit sorted out like right now. I've been looking at battery grips because I hate swapping batteries in the cold but I'm torn. I saw the official Canon BG-E14 is like $150 which seems wild when Neewer has one for like $40 on Amazon. People say the third party ones feel cheap but does that actually matter for the electronics? I'm worried about the weather sealing since I might be in light snow and I dont want to fry my new camera just to save a few bucks.

Also need a solid travel tripod that wont break my back or my bank account. My total budget for both the grip and the tripod is around $300-350 max. Here is what I am looking for:

  • Must be light enough for 5+ mile hikes
  • Stable enough for a 70-200mm f/4 lens
  • Fits in a standard carry-on bag
  • Decent height because I am 6 feet tall and hate hunching over

I was looking at the Peak Design one but its way out of my price range. I saw some stuff about the Ulanzi Zero Y and the Manfrotto Element but I'm worried the Ulanzi is too flimsy for a DSLR body like the 90D since it's kinda chunky compared to mirrorless. Does anyone actually use these with a 90D or should I look at something beefier...

I had issues with the weather sealing on the cheap ones where they just failed in damp conditions, which is scary when you're out in the snow. The Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip is definitely overpriced, but the Vello BG-C10 Battery Grip for Canon 70D 80D 90D is a solid technical alternative that feels more robust than the Neewer. It wont fry your gear but keeps costs down. Regarding the tripod, the Ulanzi Zero Y Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod was honestly not as good as expected for a DSLR. It is way too flimsy for a 90D and a 70-200mm lens. I found it vibrates even in light wind which is pretty disappointing for the price, ngl. For your budget, the Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod is a better bet. It handles the weight much better and actually fits in a carry-on without much fuss.
