Im torn between the official Canon BG-R20 and the Neewer knockoff for my R5 Mark II. Ive got a wedding shoot in Tahoe next month and need the juice but my budget is stretched thin.

My logic was to save cash with third-party but I worry about weather sealing. Is the OEM actually worth the extra $250...

Honestly tho, buying extra Canon LP-E6P Lithium-Ion Battery packs is the smartest budget win.

I've been very satisfied with the Canon BG-R20 Vertical Battery Grip for EOS R5 Mark II. The build quality and weather sealing provide the reliability needed for professional wedding assignments.

Also, honestly, you might want to consider the risks of a third-party grip for a professional gig like a wedding. Tahoe weather can be kinda weird and I would suggest being super careful about moisture getting into those non-weather-sealed seams. If you're trying to save cash, I would suggest getting the SmallRig L-Bracket for Canon EOS R5 Mark II for the vertical ergonomics instead. It's solid metal and wont fail on you like a cheap circuit board might. Then you could grab an Anker 737 Power Bank PowerCore 24K to charge your camera via USB-C during breaks. It's way more reliable than a knockoff grip that might cause a lock-up right when the couple is kissing... seriously wouldnt want you to have a gear failure during such a big event. Make sure to test everything before you head out tho!

I have had issues with those third-party grips on critical shoots before. Unfortunately, the electronic communication between the grip pins and the camera body is not as good as expected, often leading to annoying lock-ups or phantom battery drain. For a Tahoe wedding where you might face some moisture, the weather seals on the Neewer Vertical Battery Grip for Canon EOS R5 Mark II simply wont hold up compared to the genuine parts. Quick tip: if the Canon BG-R20 Vertical Battery Grip is too expensive right now, just skip the grip and buy two extra Canon LP-E6P Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery packs. Its much safer to swap batteries manually than to risk a cheap accessory shorting out your camera during the ceremony. If you absolutely need the vertical controls, look at the Vello BG-C20 Battery Grip for Canon EOS R5 Mark II since they usually have better build tolerances.
